Maxspect LED owners!!!

Any news or people with the 180w version. This just seem to be a better punch for those of us with deep tanks than the 160w.

So what kind of optics are these?

Not very difficult to find these lens, I got 40 and 60 degree lens from HK supplier and from my memory they were $65 for 100 units (I think). I got few spare ones laying around in my office

Ohh by the way Luxeon lens would neatly fit Semi LEDs which MaxSpect are using. Here is item number on fleebay 150437874680, you could also browse this seller's shop and see for yourself. There is a large choice on diffrent lens as they also do from 8 degree upwards. Plenty of cheap Semi LEDs too :lol2:

Glad to help

so pretty much all it takes is to get the Maxspect fixture.. get some lenses.. find out how to instal them.. most likely will need to drill little bit to fit it in.. put it over the semiLeds and should be good to go with much better PAR? or even if I want spend extra money to add some Cree LEDs + lenses and have one bad as(_._) fixture..

oh my.. I am getting lost.. Maxspect, AI, Acan, and plenty more.. which one which one..

today I got message from Acan, that they will have new LED fixtures with new controlers.. to control intensity separately of white and blue LEDs.. sometimes in end of June..

I hate to make decisions.. I want to spend between $800 and $1500 for LEDs fixture but just do not know which one..

Sure you can. The star should be able to fit in the same screws of the SEMI. They're both 3W just the lumens change. I know people who have swapped SEMI's for CREE

Anyone know the difference in "look" between the blue CREE's and the stock SEMI led on the Maxspect? I have the g2 230w, trying to make it look less...white with everything on haha...when its blue only its too blue

You could swap some of the royal blues for CREE's Blue (not royal blue).

Royal Blues are 450 nm while Blues are 475. Not a huge difference though. I wish there was a lower nm LED closer to violet.

Anyways, the difference between SEMI's blue and CREE's are not huge. Very very close the color from them

would it be worth to swap the white semiLEDs for white Cree LEDs?

here is what I would put instead of semiLEDs: http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/the-46/CREE-XR-dsh-E-Q5-Cool/Detail

what do U think guys?

I would only do that after the SemiLEDs either burnt out or after 2 years. Doing it now will void your warranty. Also I don't see the Semi are inferior to CREE Q5 in terms of brightness. Both are rated at ~110 lumens at 350mA. Semi is a little lower in color temp ~5000K while CREE is rated at 6500K. SemiLEDs is a US based company with factories in Far East and their products are ISO9001 certified. I don't see their products being inferior in quality.

Of course if you want to swap the white with blue or other colors for the look that you like. By all means, go for it if the warranty doesn't matter.
JMO.

I just received my 230w and put it up last night. Setup was easy. I'm switchin from t5 so it's very different. I'm seeing colors that the t5 never brought out. The manual has an error in how to set up timer. You need to press Mode to save your settng and get to the next light group, not Timer.

Just curious for other 230w owners. Are there good spots to replace white 3w led's for blue that would still even out the over all look? I don't want patches of bluer portions :p

Cree Blues at 25% vs Semi-LED Blues and Violets at 100%

IMO, there is a significant difference between the Cree Blues LEDS and the SemiLED Royal blues. I created the below example of equal PAR and color (as close as possible) between the AquaIllumination (Cree powered Blue LEDS) and Maxspect (Semi-LED powered Royal Blue LEDS.)

AI25BMXS100B.jpg

In this photo, the G2 is running all of it's blue and violet LEDS at full power (14 Blue + 4 Violet = 18 LEDS @ 3watts = 54 Watts.)

The AIs are running all of their blues at 25% power (16 @ 3 watts = 48 Watts X 25% = 12 Watts)

At these settings, both are generating the same 190 PAR measured 6" directly below the center of each lights (note - the results were the same with second AI unit turned off so no light bled into the test.)

As for the color, it's difficult to show blues in a photo (especially from a cell camera), the Maxspect Semi-LEDS have a distinct purple hue to them. They also *appear* brighter, but much of this is a result of the reflection from the top of the water and light being spilled on the walls (the Maxspect is 7" above the tank but can't be lowered any further as it is at the limits of the hanging kit.)

To my eye, the best color balance would be a combination of Blue and Royal blue. This would provide the additional "pop" of the Royal blues while not creating an artificial looking purple appearance.

wow that a big difference! You don't really notice it until you have tanks side by side. I though they were pretty much the same. Now I'd love to make an array with a combination of CREE's royal blues and semiLED's RBs

I just wanted to post a webcam shot.. I can't wait to go on a SPS shopping spree.

I just finally finished my custom tank build. The dims are 36x24x13 and I have a G2 110w maxspect that I've had now for a couple months waiting to go over this tank. Will this be enough light to keep anything I want or should I get another 110 unit or sell my 110 and get a 160? Thanks in advance!

Most would say 110w should be enough for such a shallow tank but 160w gives your options and adequate enough for any future upgrade.

Cree and Semi's royal blue, both would fall within certain (nm). You would get the same result by using Cree or Semi's royal blue LEDs, the only diffrence you are seeing is the violet LEDs in MaxSpect setup with that nice pinky violet colour.

While Cree vs SemiLED Royal Blues may be similar - That is not the difference seen in the photograph. The AquaIllumination is using Cree Blues (470nm) The Maxspect uses SemiLED Royal Blues (445nm).

The violet (403nm) LEDS in the G2 put out little if any visible light. I can't detect any difference in color when the violet LEDS are covered.

Think its worth it to switch out the violets for Cree blues or Royal blues? I was thinking of switching out some of the white 3w's for blues as well.

I've only had the G2 for a few of weeks - I have no way of determining if the 403nm light is providing any benefit. I believe some have swapped them out for more PAR. I ordered extra LEDS of all colors with the G2 to do just that, but they were not delivered with the G2 and have yet to show up.

I've also come to the realization that the G2 is not well suited for use over a shallow frag tank. Initially I thought the lack of optics would provide a better spread of light, but this was not sufficient when mounted just above the water using the rails (partially due to the fact the rails block a significant amount of light due to their poor design.)

The lack of optics also prevents them from being raised high enough to provide enough coverage over a 24" X 24" X 8" tank due to the large amount of light lost to spillage (visible in the photograph.).

I'm going to give it a couple more weeks to to decide. I might replace it with another LED that uses optics to support higher mounting - or perhaps just use a T5 setup.
