Maxspect Mazarra.

Hi guys!

I was at the Aquarama 2011 Exhibition today and was surprised to see that Maxspect has a new range of lightset named Mazarra. From what I can see, it has a modular concept design lightset that is able to connect up to 16 set as I was told. Maxspect is using a newer type of cree led, different than the ones that is available on the G2. This new led lightset has dimming function as well as a programmable function that will switch on 1 modular lightset at a time. Timer is available too.

From what I gather, the lightset is sold as a package of 2 modular lightset with a controller and a power supply box that is able to power 2 modular lightset at a time. There is a type of a frame from where this modular lightset is mounted. Might be a different purchase if I'm not mistaken as the one I see is being used for a 3ft tank and was fully extended. For a longer tank, you may need a longer frame to hang the led light. The led comes with 3 different set of lenses, 90 degree, 60 degree and a 45 degree lense. Each light set houses a total of 16 led bulb.

I am very excited to see an upgrade version compared to the G2 but I feel this is a totally different type compared to the G2. However, the bad news to would be upgrader is the price. I would not expose the estimate price for fear of mis-informing but it is expensive due to the new cree led bulb. You might be able to have it assembled with the semi led bulb but in my opinion, I would get it with the new cree bulb so that you might have a wider option of keeping high light consuming corals. Another minus point for this new light is the smaller area being illuminated compared to the G2. A stock G2 is able to illuminate a 2x2 ft surface but this ligh, from what I can see, has a smaller area of illumination, 1.5x1.5 ft of surface area. The demo unit uses 2 set of the new light for a 3x2x2 tank, a total of 4 modular light hanging on 2 Maxspect own light frame. The higher cost to own these new light set will be more unbearable to those that have a tank longer than 3ft. A 4 footer will need 3 set/pair, while it's a toss up for a 5 footer tank owner to get either 3 light set/pair or 4. A 6 footer tank owner will need 4 set/pair. The Maxspect Mazarra is currently being used in the marine tank competition and it need 2 set/pair to illuminate the 3x1.5x1.5 competition tank.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the update. Did you happen to see the new G3s at Aquarama? I think they were going to be released there but no info on their website yet.

I've went to the show and took some photos as well:

I wouldn't want that contraption over my tank - BUT - at the same time, I think that looks wicked :D

Yeah they were the sponsor of the marine tank competition.

Here're some snapshots I've taken. Please note that I didn't change to 10000K white balance when I took these photos so they look very blue.

The finished product on these units will probably look 10x better. Its nice to see a company continually moving forward with their designs; still keeping my AI's though.

Agreed - with the wireless controller they just need to find a way to hide the power cords.

I'm waiting for the pre-order to start so I can order my set!

Can't wait! :celeb1:

So what about the tanks with a canopy, with the G2s you can fit them inside on the railing. I think all the rigging around the top looks a bit rediculous, and they draw a lot of attention off the tank. I want people to come in and the first thing they see is all the beautiful organism that I am working so hard to keep, that's what they need to appreciate. I don't want people to think that it's a light show, or it to seem obvious that I spent so much money on a lighting system.

I take it they swivel and move on their own, progammable? The lights don't need to be able to get me to the moon, just light the tank, and the G2s are doing just fine at that...

They have thought about all the situations, you can install it with the rails included, or hang it with the pendant-kit, or a wall-mount kit.

However on the other hand, lots of the reefers I've talked to are techno-geeks and they absolutely LOVE to show folks their equipments, skimmers, lighting, calcium reactors, computer controller, dosing pumps, etc.

This is the sump of my friend, who LOVES to show off his equipments, as much as his corals :)

Well I am definitely a a techno-geek as well. I do enjoy showing those things off to other hobbiest, but for me this hobby is about educating those outside the hobby about the critters in the tank. I guess that's the zooligist coming out in me.

I'm glad they are still allowing the other mounting kits! Does anyone know a general price range on these units? I know nothing is yet finalized, just want to try and get some idea at what we may be looking at...

not really, if your looking at the 50W version.

pre-sale pricing for the 3 module (150W) unit is listed @ 950 + 200 for the controller = 1150

AI sol package x 2 units (150w) and controller is +- 1275 (with hanging brackets etc, not factored in above costs).

its comparable in costs, even when converting from AUD to USD.
1 aud = 1.05 usd

im not sure how much extra the modular bracketing will be, might take you to the cleaners for it...all speculation tho.

Good grief it's LED lighting. Why do they need to make the space above a reef tank look like something you'd see on a construction site? Keep it clean and simple guys. Oh well maybe we'll see something cleaner from Maxspect or another mfgr. soon.

Could be the whole patent fiasco in the US slowing things down again as far as release dates here in the US. I anticipate a dumbed down version to be available in the US because of the patent issues tied to Orbitec but who knows. I think Pacific Sun ran into similar problems selling into the US.
