I like the LED/T5 combo. Im not a DIY guy and the pre-made fixtures are stupid expensive. I think to answer your question it adds more spectrums. I switched from Halide/ T5 to Reef Breeder LEDs last November and they work great

Adding T5 also fills in the light coverage of the tank when used with LEDs. But like Bob stated it mainly helps with the spectrum.

Shadowing can be an issue with LEDs. Adding T5s will help fill the gaps and also add more PAR and color.

I agree with the other comments. Another big plus is T5s are flatter lighting. This helps reduce the, to me, excessive shimmer of some LEDs. I find Kessil lights alone make way to much shimmer.
