Maxspect Razor

I looked at one of the 120w units at my LFS & was compeletely underwelmed. It was over a 24 x24" cube & the whole tank looked like the corals were in a cave with spotlights on them.

Way too dark/dim for my tastes. After seeing that, I seriously doubt I'd be happy with two of the 160w units over my 48x24" 120g Sps dominant system. I would need 3 of those to make me happy & with the tank's cross brace that won't work.

I'm still searching for any commercial unit that legitmately covers 24 x 24" with good spectrum & intensity without supplemation & just as importantly, looks good. I'm not competely ruling out the razor, but I'm disappointed.

Performance is the key right now, so we'll see...........need more time.

Also, just wanted to say thanks to Mike & others for posting impressions & performance updates.

The light must have been dimmed down. ANY commercial fixture will cover 24x24 easily, with blinding light. Even the 120w Chinese fixtures I've used can easily cover that, and hit 300 PAR at the sandbed.

DIY, custom chinese lights, GHL Mitras, or the Radion Pro when it comes out are your only options for a somewhat "complete" spectrum. The only thing the Razors lack are some red and cyan. The violets are also a little overpowering, with no way to dim them by themselves.

damn my order just got voided. NOT COOL!

Sounds familiar not cool I agree!!!

If vendors can't get their sites to work and they have to honor a sale at a discount oh well correct it after you honor it!!

I run a large website and that is what we do make it up next few orders!!

This is bad Business!!!

anyone worried abotu the warm white LED's? Lots of people have doubts about using them.

I don't understand why there would be doubts about the warm white LEDs. The use of warm white LEDs is necessary for proper color rendition. Metal Halide and Fluorescent light sources both cover broad spectrums in cyan, green, amber, orange, red, and therefore are truly able to reproduce colors accurately, eg, a red coral will look red, green will be green, etc. LEDs are narrow-spectrum emitters, even those considered 'white'. Adding the warm white is what brings the Razor far and above what the competition can do in terms of color. This is because the Razor has a much broader spectrum and only having sharp peaks at a few of the wave lengths.

I could not find the vendor the bhazard mentioned that stll had the 14% discount but I did find another that accepted a 10% sitewide discount and free shipping. I am happy with that. I dont want to outright post the name as they are not a site sponsor and I don't want to possibly break any rules but the site name starts with a "P" and is a complete pets site.

I looked on coral vue's vendor list and there is only one vendor with a P and they dont offer any discount.

Chris, since you around I'm debating on a 120 watt fixture for my 18x18x9 cube. Do you feel it would be too much for such a small tank? I'm very interested in a full spec light and this one seems to be the cream of the crop. Also, given my tank mix I am leaning towards a 16K. Is there one kelvin light that most people choose?

Dave, I don't see a discount on this light with the "P" vendor either.

Since the Maxspect Razor is adjustable between 0-100% on both the white and blue channels it can never be labeled as "too much". You'll have no problem using the Razor on your cube if you hang it, the length is 20.5" and is too long to use the legs.

Lol.........are you trying to tell me my eyes are wrong? I know what I was looking at............... I had the owner of the LFS turn them all the way up to 100%.

The 120w razor looked like crap over a 24x24 area. I'll reserve judgement on the 160w till I see it in person. The 160w razor comes close to covering that 24x24" area, according to it's spectral graph, but the 120w version without that extra puck of lights is a fail for me.

I've seen two generations of those chinese lights at my other LFS & they only looked good with two over a 40 breeder. One above the tank had dark edges on both sides.

thanks for clearing that up

Oh and my maxspect razor just shipped. I found it for 10% off and free shipping yesterday.

How were you notified your last order voided? I am a suspicion I ordered from the same place but haven't heard a peep from them and no shipping notification yet either.

Chris, sorry to ask the same question another way. But I have a 40Breeder and was thinking about the 120 but wasnt sure if it would be enough light. I was doubting the 160 Watt but the crossbrace would be in the way. Also my tank only has two Islands, one on each side of crossbrace. Thanks!!!

Can someone please do me a favor ?

Can someone please do me a favor ?

Can you measure the distance between the suspension clips on a 120 razor? I just got my hangers installed and am curious how far apart the arms will need to be.

Thanks

I've had the 27" Razor 16K over my system since early August. The tank was setup in July using established rock in a remote container to minimize cycle. I moved all livestock over from my 90-gallon system that was lit using T5 lighting. The new tank is 36" x 24" x 18". The light is suspended about 6" above the tank.

Overall, I've been very impressed with this fixture. I've got a mixed selection of corals, but lean to SPS. Everything has tolerated the change in lighting and over the past few weeks, I've really seen a dramatic improvement in color and growth. I thought I'd share some pics from the system to give you an idea of color rendition.

The Bird of Paradise is directly below an LED cluster and is about 9" under the surface

This War Coral is near the front of the tank - pretty far from the LEDs

This scoly is also near the front and is shielded from direct light by the rock structure

I recommend the 160W (27") Razor for your 40G breeder. Please see the thread in our Reef Central forum, it showcases the 160W Razor over a 40G breeder.
