May Mtg

Hey guys, So the May meeting will be held on May 20th at Art's house with a time to be determined by Art!

Any ideas for a topic you are interested in? There are plenty of things we all want to know more about, right? So discuss it here!

How about a discussion on reef fishes. For us newer reefers it is very hard to select inhabitants for our tanks. There are so many cool fish out there. And there is soooo much bad info it is easy to choose the incorrect fish. As responsible tank owners we want to make sure we have a fish that will not out grow our tank and one that will be happy with the aquascaping we have and other tankmates. We could also incoorperate quarentine tanks and there set-up and how everyone acclimates there fish. Just one of the many things I am trying to learn about.

That topic sounds good to me... Ashley is bored with the corals, and I need to keep her happy... Besides, its a broad topic and can cover anything from size needs to aggressiveness or coral destruction... Hmmm, coral digestion??? lol

That's a good idea. In the past what we have done is focused on one group of fish. I gave a presentation on gobies a while ago.

The only thing is that it's a BIG topic. It might be too big for one meeting. Maybe you guys could narrow it down...say to something like tangs or wrasses or blennies and mandarins.

What do you think?

Well, we had someone interested in tangs... I'm more interested in gobies... But it doesn't really matter to me... Perhaps a particular group isn't what we need to focus on as much as which groups are reef friendly and what benefit they bring (ie~ gobies and algae consumption) and which groups to stay away from and why (triggers and angels nipping at corals, etc)... And any possible cautionary notes (agressive behaviour, speacial size or care needs) But perhaps that would be too basic... I'm just looking forward to meeting the rest of you guys... So I'll be there...

How bout narrowing it down to the most commonly kept reefsafe fish. These fish are kept for a reasons such as hardiness aggressiveness, food they will eat, size etc.
According to the books I keep seeing some of these fish recommended:
6 line wrasse
Royal Gramma
Yellow Tang
Clownfish (percula or false?)
firefish
Green Chromis

Of course some of these choices are debatable but I think it is a good topic.

Do any of you guys want to give the presentation?

It's a really easy way to learn a lot about the topic!

I would like for someone to sort of organize which groups of fish we talk about and then lead sort of a general discussion about these different types of fish. Things to discuss would be stuff like: size of tank requirements, are they jumpers, are they aggressive to small/same size/larger fish, have they been known to nip corals, what do they eat, what fish will they compete with for food.

With the collective knowledge of the club being pretty large I would say everyone should be able to contribute to the discussion, but it would be nice if someone volunteered to basically organize/lead the discussion (some who is not me if at all possible).

Hey that is a good topic too. Because Im a newbie too, any info right now would be helpful to me. At one meeting I would like to discuss "fish diseases" I have just recently lost a fish to "something" and not sure what it was.

Oh Zack...excuses excuses. hah hah.

Marybeth that's a great idea for a meeting topic. Maybe we could do that one in July? We'll have to see what the new president wants to do about it though (since by that time there will be new people in the board positions).

No one wants to volunteer to lead the discussion??? It's really not that hard.

May the 20th sounds great - count me in and this is my first meeting! Since I'm a newbie, hopefully, I can escape the presentations until I know my subjects better :). From reading past posts, it appears that the food is as important as the meeting topic. So, what should I bring? I'm not a cook , but I'll certainly come up with something. I make a mean strawberry shortcake dessert...

Ok everyone I would like to have the meeting at 2:00pm on the 20th. I'm going to grill chicken and a beef brisket so bring whatever you think will go with it. If you have kids, bring them and if they want they can swim while we have the meeting. They can swim in the pool not the tank :)

I'm not much on cooking... Hmmm, Soda or chips??? Art, could you be a pal and either PM me directions or post'em??? I know you're near Lovell and Pellissippi, so it shouldn't be too hard to find...

PS~ You ever sell any of those zoo eating nudi's???

No Mel, I'm serious this time! I explicitly asked her and she said she would. If I should not bring the potato salad, riot in her direction, not mine. :D

Coult: IMO the food is so much more important than the meeting topic. But I think everyone already knows that about me.

Zack: if you taunt me this last time and do not bring the potato salad I may have to come to your house and have a talk with your mom. Tell her that some heavily tattooed girl is seriously in need of potato salad and will come over there if none shows up at the meeting.

Art: 2pm sounds great!

Scott: yes, I will make the solutions and everyone should bring their TDS meters for calibration! My only issue is this: we have, at work, what's called a MilliQ system that is supposed to output pure water, but with these meters being so sensitive I am not sure if the water will be THAT pure, ya know? I will check on it in the next couple of weeks. So bring your meters and we will try it out!

art seems to be up one why he keeps each fish and there is a reason for each of them lets talk about what fish are good for reefs tanks that would be great. just a thought

All this food talk makes me hungry. Im gonna bring something sweet. I can cook just about anything... so if anyone has a request, let me know:D I will also need directions since I have never been there.
