Meet Thumper!

I went through quite a journey, and a lot of anguish, to get to this point. I lost two peacocks to a tank with... something... wrong with it. Bad powerhead? Bad heater? Some latent toxicity?

I threw everything away -- sand, rocks, powerheads, filters, heater, everything except the empty refugium, tank, and skimmer body, and started over. New sand, rocks, powerheads, filter.

Then, wait, eight weeks for full cycle.

Then, track down a peacock.

Thumper has been alive for a few weeks now, so I think it's time for an introduction. Here's Thumper!

Very nice specimin there. That sucks that you went through all that to get to this point. Hopefully you'll have better luck this time. Props to you for not giving up.

Thumper is about four inches. She's (I'm pretty sure Thumper is a "she" -- just like in Bambi?) currently in a 20 gallon tank that is Very Happy (note all of the coralline algae -- and it's less than three months old).

She's decided to attack the aquarium a lot -- it's very disconcerting (yes, it's acrylic). Maybe she sees a reflection? I think I will be upgrading to a 30 gal sometime in the next year or so.

Her diet consists of shrimp, krill, silversides, and squid, as well as some snails and hermits.

Thanks for the praise -- I just feel bad that I lost two specimens. The money isn't an issue, it's the lives of two beautiful animals.

perfect setup i found that mantis shrimp feel much more comfortable un a tank with more rock and less open space, while monte was in her 40G breeder she would rarely even stick her head out, now in her 33G cuber she is moving all over the place and is loving the tank, i have about 20lbs of sand and 30 lbs of rock in there with her and she has already built a 5 way tunnel system that is just thicker then her body at the entrance and exit and in the middle she can turn on a dime and pop out the top if she has too, she is so smart
