PLease please please................If you decide to sell frags in the auction please disclose if they have bubble algae ( you know who you are) or any other ploblems and let people make educated purchases.
Its a real pain in the *** after getting home after 11:00pm and trying to aclimate a coral, just to find out it has some kind of problem.
Please be courtious of your fellow reef keeper.

sure would be nice to be able to throw corals right into the main display tank after a long night at the frag auction... but I would be remiss if I didn't beat on my drum about getting a quarantine tank.

There's a whole bunch of things worse than bubble algae...

:eek1:

Apatasia no fun, but IMHO it is hard to completely erradicate, and is likely to find it's way into your tank, regardless of where you acquire your rock and corals. Get ahold of some redbugs, aefw, monti nudies, and other buggers, and you will be real bummed. They can completely wipe out your corals, and if treatment is to be used, can also risk losing your tank inhabitants. The best way is to quarentine, then dip prior to them making way into your tank. I think the small investment of a full proof measure such as this will alleviate future problems which could cost you your entire investment. JMO though, not trying to stir up the pot.....LOL...

I dont think you are at all... you bring a good point and a very true one aswell. That would be the best way to do it, and i will admit, i have not taken all of the safe measures for watching out for stuff like that, but after i heard from other people and their horror stores, i now am going to invest in some Coral DIp, and a nicer QT tank.

It just seems that we spend all of this money on equipment then stock it with corals and fish and then find out later, what potential pests exist, and how hard they are to remove. One little frag could bring in one huge nightmare.....

If you want to use emerald crabs, try to get males...they are best for bubble algae control. The way to tell...and no making fun of me (Mac, you know who I'm talking about here!!!) the male has what looks like the Washington Monument on his "stomach" while the female has the Capital Building. Here's a pic of the Male

hahaha, i remember asking mac how to sex crabs before and he used the washington monument and capital building visual to explain it to me....lol

BTW, thanks for everything last ngiht Marcye, that was a great meeting. And let me know if you ever need or want help on a certain weekend, but like a week or two ahead, i would skip gatorland for a day...lol

I purchased what was listed as a 20 polyp frag of zoanthids, only to get them home and find it was a 5 polyp frag. Basic math would tell anyone that 5 is not even close to 20. Thinking it was a 20 polyp frag made me bid a bit more than I would have for 5 polyps.
Not as impressed as I thought I would have been with the auction.
I think items need to be labeled better, not just "5 polyp zoanthids". Let people know what they are bidding on. This might increase the bids and money the auction brings in.
Just a thought.
Also, please, please, please keep your hair algae in your tank. One frag of zoas I got was covered in hair algae. Thank God for my foxface.
Who would feel like this is a good item to bring and auction off???
Hair algae???

Hexedagain, thanks for your post. And since this is the 2nd complaint I've seen on RC regarding Saturdays Auction, I'm going to make a few comments to all the ORCA members who may read this post. And I’m asking for all of your support to help make this auction more successful going forward.

Number one and foremost is quarantine your corals. The Club is "NOT" responsible for the quality or safety of the frags being auctioned. It's "your" fellow hobbyists and peers that bring these frags to auction and there are those who have no conscience regarding spreading their problems to fellow hobbyists. Just wait until you introduce flatworms or redbug into your tank from an auction... You don’t know the meaning of furious until that happens. QUARENTINE your corals… And I do believe I stated that quite clearly before this and every other auction we’ve had this year to quarantine your corals.

Regarding the corals that people are bringing being labeled incorrectly or misleading people regarding their contents: If… you bring home a coral that was misidentified or clearly “not” what it said what it was, please PM or email me with your member or guest ID number from the meeting and include the coral bag number. I will research the issue and respond back with my findings. This is not a guarantee that you’re situation will be fixed. However, if I receive multiple complaints regarding the same person(s) who has brought said frags, the ORCA Board will take action against the offending member. This practice will not be tolerated. This club relies on the frag auction as a huge source of enjoyment and entertainment for its members. Lying and misleading club members will not be tolerated.

The auction for the most part goes smoothly and most folks walk away with great frags at a fraction of the price you’d find anywhere else. Unfortunately there is some risk because of the nature of the beast. It’s up to you all to help make this auction better. Let me and the ORCA Board know when issues need to be addressed.

Please consider “not” hazing the auction or ORCA on these forums because of a few issues that are member specific. Follow the process I’ve written above and I promise to help improve the auction. And remember, QUARENTINE your corals. Putting corals in your home aquarium is your responsibility and yours alone. Don’t blame others for your negligence or laziness. It’s a pain in the “you know what”, but it’s absolutely necessary.

Most respectfully and on behalf of the ORCA Board,

Matt Kantz
ORCA Pres. 2007

No disrespect to ORCA at all. You guy's did, and do a great job.
I wasn't "hazing" at all, or I didn't intend on that. I apologize if I came off that way.
I know the member labeled the bag as 20 instead of 5, not ORCA.
I was just listing it here because of the topic of the post.
I would love to see the auctions be as great as they can be, and intend on donating frags to the next one I attend. Properly labeled and pest free.
I will PM you with the info from the bag the frag came in, so you can follow up however you would like.
Like I said, I did not intend on hazing, flaming, or showing any disrespect to ORCA at all. I thank everyone involved for the great meeting and the fun I had. I was simply hoping the person that did this might read about it, and maybe correct it next time.
Sorry if I came off wrong here.

My post, as well, was directed to the people who bring the frags (members or guests) not to the club.
Sorry if I sound ****y, but I dont think its too much to ask of people to bring properly labeled and pest free frags, as it was asked of them to use heavy duty bags to bring their frags in.
Do you?

now worries Hexed' I tryed to indicate in the beginning of my message that I was posting to the RC readers, not specifically you. I just used your post because it was the second written complaint.

And it's not uncommon for RC readers to post their complaints or issues here on RC. I was trying to encourage folks to let me know persoanlly about auction specific complaints so I can act on them.

Thanks again and I am confident your next auction experience will be a better one.

Matt
