just added a male and it is moving aroudn a lot right up front glass. also my sixline that is normally in and out of rocks is just going up and down on front glass close to the melanaras.. what you think its doing trying to maintain dominace.. its never done this before.

I have two each in a different display. One has male markings, the other female. Had them for about 3 months now. Very active swimmers, and docile with tank mates. Occasionally they'll flip a snail, but never hurt one.

Behavior wise, they are different. One is very friendly the other skittish.

Love this fish though, so amazing colors. Feed selcon and quality meaty foods and it'll color up nicely.

They are big time hunters like most most other halichoeres. They are moving all the time looking for food. Its funny to watch them when I am working on the tank. As soon as I pick up something or move something they are all over it hoping to find a tasty morsel.

Mine is super active, very social, loves to come say hi, doesn't bother any of its tank mates, always hunting. But it tries to eat any clean up crew I have in the tank. Will literally dig up snails and bash them against the rocks.

I am actually considering taking mine out of the tank and getting a different wrasse. This is the first wrasse I have had that has been this much of a nightmare when it ones to keeping a stable clean up crew.

So if it would leave my clean up crew alone it would be the perfect fish. It is a great fish to keep pests under control!

I just added one to my tank 9 days ago. He promptly buried himself and stayed hidden for 4 days which is fairly typical behavior. Since then, he comes out around 1pm and goes to bed at 9:30pm. Not sure if his clock is still adjusting. He is pretty active when he is out. He swims from rock to rock carefully exploring and pecking. So far he has not bothered any of my snails or hermit crabs and I hope it stays that way. I really like his colors and he seems to be a very peaceful tankmate.

mine stayed buried for around the same amount of time. mine took about 2 weeks to really get used to my light cycle. once he got used to it, he was out all the time as soon as the lights came on and goes to bed when they go out now.

mine also started out leaving all my inverts alone. but as time went on he slowly started eating them until it got to the point that is was his lifes mission to eat them all. i have heard it is hit or miss when it comes to them and if they leave your inverts alone or not.

Sounds like it is probably just a matter of time before he takes after the snails and hermits.

So for those that are keeping a melanurus, what are you using for a CUC that they won't mess with?

i have one that was very active then the 6 line beat him up even thou the 6 line is smaller the melanarus hid for days then would come out and got beat on. i removed the 6 line and hes back to being very active. i really like wrasses does anyone else know what other wrasses i can keep with this melanarus i dont want him to become mean like the 6 line did

The hardiest and oldest fish in my tank. Goof ball personality. He's lived through an ich outbreak that killed most of my fish, a silicone disaster which took most of my corals, multiple tank upgrades, and the majority of my stupid ideas and at times horrible husbandry. He's the peacemaker in the tank, doesn't bother anyone, eats like a pig (I have to replenish my cuc from time to time), always on the move and hunting. You can set a clock by him- out of bed by 11am, back in the sand by 930pm. Awesome fish- definitely recommended.

+1 on eating inverts. Mine has killed shrimp, dozens of snails, 2 feather dusters and at least 1 emerald crab over 2 years.

He is a beauty though. He is extremely active and fun to watch, so I tolerate his hardy appetite.

i really dont think it matters too much. mine has gone after huge turbo snails, big hermits like electric blues, any shrimp i put in the tank.

only thing so far he has left alone is a CB shrimp so far.... my conchs, star fish, sally light foot crab when i had him (had to get rid of, got too big and started attacking fish) and i had 1 huge red mithrax crab that he left alone from what i saw. everything else was fair game. anything that had a shell he would flip over and have at it. my cerith and nessarius snails he would literaly dig up out of the sand.

keeping a good CUC has been a big task since i added him to my tank. the last CUC shipment i got was about $105 free shipping from live aquaria with alot of different stuff. i can honestly say he ate atleast $75 of it with in the first 2 weeks. you may get one and never have a problem, but you may also get one that is a complete nightmare. just be prepaired for the chance you get the nightmare. but again it is a crap shoot.

Mine doesnt seem to bother any of my inverts that I've seen. My peppermint shrimp may have disappeared though. He never bothered my cleaner when it was alive, though he might be the reason it isnt alive....

I dont think you have to worry much about it becoming mean like a six line. Few fish are as aggressive as a six line wrasse.

Ive kept a couple of melanurus wrasse through out the years and the only time Ive had an issue is when trying to find a pair. The two would usually end up fighting and it was the female beating up the male.

You can keep members of the same family together as well. I currently have a yellow coris wrasse, radiant wrasse, dusky wrasse and gray headed wrasses together in the same aquarium with no issues. Although at feeding time the dusky lets everyone know he's the boss. But this aggression is very minor and never has lead to any actual damage. A short chase is usually the end of it.

I was hesitant at first about getting my Melanurus Wrasse because research told me about its problem with inverts, but I believe the pros outweigh the cons on this fish. It has beautiful color patterns and a great personality.

I was nervous about my Fire Shrimp because I read they like newly molted shrimp as a treat, but he has molted several times now and the wrasse hasn''t payed him any attention. I did watch him pick a conch clean out of his shell within 10 minutes of adding the poor guy. Saw a hermit proudly strutting his shell a little later
