Drilling old acrylic

Drilling old acrylic

Melev
Sorry to hijack your thread but I have a question about drilling acrylic. My tank is three years old and I am thinking about drilling the bottom of my sump to put in a bulkhead for an external pump. I am concerned that the acrylic has beacome brittle over time and that it could be very risky. My tank is a Tenecor bow front with the rear of the tank being the sump area.I would run spa flex from the bulkhead to the pump which would be in a closet next to the tank.

Thanks
Rich

Well, I agree it does sound risky. Drilling it slowly would be best, and I would have it flat on some wood that will support it as you drill. That will prevent it busting through as you cut through the material.

You might contact Tenecor to see what they say.

Thanks Marc
The plan was to drill from the bottom first, say half way then finish the hole from the other side so there is no busting through.
Awesome star fish.

Hey Melev! When you use your Phosban reactor, how long does the Rowa work until the media needs to be changed? Also, have anymore of those awesome pics. BTW, any new projects you are currently working on for your tank? Thanks for all you helpful info.

Tbduval, you know when the media is used up when the output of water measures for phosphate. As long as the effluent tests 0, all phosphate is being removed from the water.

No new projects to talk about right now. I did some water changes in three tanks today. And I still have 30g of water left over.

If Dr Ron confirms the ID, I may turn this guy loose in my tank to consume Green Star Polyps. :D

wow i just got done reading this all the way from the start
took about a week but it was so worth it

you inspired me to keep working on the new system i have under way

thank you for the awesome documentary :D

From the thread on Marine Depot, it appears to be:
Phyllodesmium briareum - Briareum stecheri, Solenopodium stelleri (both briareids) and Pachyclavularia

And if it is, it will eat Green Star Polyps (Pachyclavularia).

Ron doesn't think that I'll be that lucky, but it looks like it might work out.

You're quite welcome. At least you finished before we hit page 300. :D

They are an invasive coral, and can and will grow on anything they touch. I don't mind seeing them here and there, but I have 4 individual zones that have it spreading, and it will outgrow SPS easily, smothering those corals to death. Having this little guy eating away at the GSP would be an easier solution to trying to peel it off the rockwork in the reef.

Before yesterday, I didn't even think there was such a critter. Nibbles, the Powder Blue Tang I had last year used to eat the polyps daily so that it couldn't spread. Since she died last November, they've got nothing to keep them in check.

Really nice video! Definately felt like a trailer. I have been thinking of doing the something like that. Maybe tomorrow since I just worked on aquascaping today.

Oh, I forgot to tell you guys! I downloaded the video from the CF II card directly to my laptop, and did the editing in Microsoft Movie Maker, compressed it and uploaded it to my site.

I wanted to make sure my laptop could handle that so when I go to MACNA this September, I can make some videos (vidcasts) available to those of you that are unable to attend. We will be recording some brief podcasts as well, but I was worried the laptop with 1/2 a gig of RAM wouldn't be able to handle it.
