Melev's new Nano!

another question...

how is that paint holding up?? i was under the impression that you needed marine safe paint... not true?

It was pretty big when I got it, so probably 8 x 8 as well. I didn't have the tank ready, so the RBTA was placed in a net and hung in my quarantine tank under the light for a week while I tried to get this tank up and running.

Within a month or so, it split. Honestly, I would have preferred a tiny cute one that grew over a long period of time.

I don't feed my BTAs anything. They just catch food from the nightly feedings, basically inhaling bits of food that the fish haven't gobbled up yet.

Good information to know. I'm considering a small RBTA for my new nano after I just complained to everyone about keeping anemones in nanos..:p From what I've found it looks like more and more people are doing it successfully, and some of the old taboos are gone.

Any experience with how fast RBTAs grow?

This particular strain is from a guy in our club that splits left and right. He has a tank full of anemones and they split regularly. I think he ends up with 3 or 4 'new' ones every month. I've not had it long enough personally to state how quickly it'll split or how fast it'll grow.

This nano does have a 150w DE MH over it, where in the past people used PC bulbs for the most part. And my tank is part of the full reef system, so I have a little more flexibility compared to someone with a mere 20g of water volume.

Running the water faster, it is silent but the surface doesn't get skimmed. I think the best solution would be two drains instead of one, but since my tank's surface is very narrow I don't want to add it as it will obstruct the light's path into the reef.

I read most of this thread, great tank, love the angled front...

as far as the flow/drain rate, have you considered using an elbow on the drain line, then extending the pipe along the entire back of the tank? it would be unobtrusive, but a lot longer = more flow rate.

... just an idea. Great work!

Hi Jason,

Yes, I've given that lots of thought. However, in the end it comes down to not blocking the light in the opening and getting water to go out a 1" bulkhead. Two bulkheads might have been better.

I took some new pictures tonight, and will post them in a few minutes.

Please excuse the cyano bloom....

This is the Money Cowrie I got in Oklahoma while coming home from the CRASE conference.

This is Jelly, one of a pair of clowns in the tank.

Here are several critters in a single shot.

And the rock anemone was elongated and the trunk reminds me of a palm tree for some reason.

Nice pics once again. That really does look alot like a palm tree. Honestly the gunk on the back and side walls of your tank bothers me alot more than the cyano.

Where's you get your clowns?

You're right, I need to chip away the coralline.

The clowns came from a woman in the Houston club (MARSH). They are supposed to be black onyx percs, but they look like regular clownfish to me. I've had them since January, and they were 3 months old when I got them so they are over a year old now.

that's a pretty small electric blue hermit.. the ones at my LFS are about the size of ping pong ball...

I like small stuff. I saw a very tiny fish at the LFS today. I asked what it was, and it turned out it was in the Pseudochromis family. The body was mostly yellow with a purple stripe or band on the top section of the body, starting behind the head and running to the tail. It wasn't 1" long, and very pretty.

It was $50 though.

For that kind of money, I'll get a Flame Angel. :D

I also saw a nice tiny Red Scooter Blenny, for $15. However, my tank has two Rose BTAs, the red Dragon's Breath, and coralline. I don't need more red in this tank.

Maybe a nice Yellow Tang.

Marc, how long does it take for the clowns to change color? I saw a black onyx last night in a local LFS and it was beautiful!

REally nice build!!!!!

I got a pair of thos Onyx clowns myself and think they are a bit older...they show some black between the first two stripes and have yet started to show their third stripe.

When you start parting with those mini-nems don't forget us down here on MARSH! Especially me!!!

Onyx is recessive trait and i dont thing these clowns will ever become true onyx, But Like Marc said They are very nice True Percs.

I think the parents are onyx or close to it but the kids dont seem to blacken up, just one of those things...

To answer your Question more directly it can take up to 2 years for True Percula clownfish to color up and even then onyx continue to develop black as long as they are growing so 3-4 years easy...

So I guess if you want black onyx clowns you really need to buy them when they are already black to know for sure.

I agree, some of my favorite smaller species:

pom pom crab
"sexy" shrimp
griessingeri goby
panda clown goby

All good suggestions! I was thinking aobut adding some sexy shrimp and forgot about them. Last night I saw a gorgeous Blood Shrimp, but again more red in a tank full of red and pink is a boring move.

Thanks for the information about the clowns. I would have liked to see more black in them at this point, but time is on my side and I can wait it out.

I gave away one of those mini carpets last weekend, so hopefully with two people growing them, they'll get populated to the point of sharing them with more people. For the past two nights, I target fed them in case that helps speed things along. ;)

I need to get something to bolt down my zoas and stuff. The hermits are flipping stuff over and messing with my 'garden'.
