So maybe we should think about offering our club expertise to the Memphis zoo?

They will not take it. We talked to them about 2 or 3 years ago and they said "No, thank you"

Well, obviously they have a handle on it, as we can see from the pix. Good to know that at least the Panda's are in impeccable shape...

They are terrible. I went there 2 years ago and wrote about this same subject. Someone up there should be fired because I have never seen such lack of proper work in such a large facility. Look at the reef tank as soon as you walk in and you will see what I mean. I also asked while I was there if someone knew what the hell was going on......

those photos were taken yesterday of the purple tang in the small display when you first walk in to the 'aquarium' (AKA chamber of death?). There was more, like the completely out of control cyano out break in one of the tanks inside, but mal-nourished animals at the zoo? Seriously, w t h? Do you get to keep your job if you don't know whats going on? Obviously Memphis has found better places to spend their cash.

The club toured the aquarium a while back. They are operating on less than a shoe string budget. The equipment is OLD and TIRED to say the least. The guy running things seemed very knowledgeable and nice but there is no money going into the aquarium. It is in a sad state.

Spousal unit, here, I was wondering if we do get to talk to someone at the memphis zoo. Would it be possible to set up some kind of donation drive going that we can set up at the Memphis Zoo to make people more aware of what is really going on, especially to those that are not well knowleaged about salt water fish and corals. I think it would give the people that do go there a better Idea on what us Club Reef are all about.
I was just a thought, So Maybe???

I understand there is no money going in but a lil TLC could actually go along way there. No one was even cleaning the tank it looked absolutely horrible. I dont think you can give an excuse of they do not have enough money. Close it down or get someone up there who knows whats going on. Give me 6 skilters and a couple days and I would have it looking better than that.

That is a good idea TATS. When I was there it didnt seem like anyone cared at all so that may be an issue as well.

I think Barrett knows the guy that is handling the Aquarium and he might be able to tell you more, and he might even get someone to talk to you.

But, I did volunteer work for the zoo for a number of years and have seen that unless you are willing to donate a large sum of money, to the operation the odds of getting anyone to listen to you were not very good. And I do literally mean a "large" sum of money.

Regretfully it does not appear that they feel the aquarium brings in much money. Pandas and tigers do!! Try an honest to goodness "letter writing" campaign and let them know how bad an impression that it left on you. That would have some impact. That or donate about 10 million dollars and tell them you would like to have a reef aquarium set up named after your sister!!

They got donations for all the new exhibits at the zoo the pandas the polar bears and so on now they are fixing the bird exhibit. Now I dont see why someone can't get a drive going to make a new aquarium. Out of all thats there it is the most needed for repair. I think it is the worst place in the Zoo.
Maybe go to the news and get something started. Andy on your side or something. Isn't he a saltwater owner?

If they were to make a new aquarium the more people would have more interest in it and the Zoo would make money on it. Even people who dont have tanks at home talk about how bad it is. it is small and not much to look at. put something in that is interesting and advertise it and people will come to see it.

Perhaps a letter written to someone in a position of authority from the club expressing the clubs desire to help ,in any way, would be the first order of business. I wouldn't say it was because the facility was awful. I would first make sure that the club had the desire and the commitment to follow through.

You can always throw them under the bus at a later time if you desire.

Who would like to "volunteer to head up a drive to do something on this"? They are welcome to get on the agenda at the next meeting and see where that takes off from there.

I would love to see the club take on something with some passion and get behind it. "maybe that is the thing that would do it". Any volunteers to spearhead this issue is very welcome I would think, it was actually discussed a couple of meetings back.

I would be morne than willing to help and work with a group, doing this. "Volunteers please"!!
