Mermaid Stand

Nice job Steve
Very creative, it should make for a very attractive stand.
Now get back to work I want to see it finished. :)

Look into a "beachwood" stain, that might be what your looking for.

Yes I was looking at some at Lowe's

Thanks for the advice on the stain guys, I can hardly wait to get to that point.

No comments to improve it, but looks really nice.

Looks great Mike!

Thanks for the encouragement gentlemen!

What kind of wood are you using for the skin? If it has an open grain you will want to pre-treat before staining so you don't get splotches. If you have a good size piece of scrap laying around I would test whatever you are going to use on that first.

I'm using poplar. Man, I have a lot to learn. I do not know if it is open grain. How do you pretreat? I've got plenty of scrap to test with. Thanks for the heads up!!!

Should be cool

Thank you!

You can find pre-stain conditioner in the same spot as you find stain in the hardware store. Just follow the instructions. Here's some good info for working with poplar including the staining tip I mentioned: http://woodworking.about.com/od/typesofwood/p/Poplar.htm

I probably should have asked someone in the know, before I bought wood to skin the stand. I bought two sheets of 1/4 poplar plywood, but it isn't solid wood.

Would this be the proper stuff to use or is it best to use a combination of material when skinning the stand?

For that matter is poplar the right wood to use or would another type of wood give a better end product?

Where did you get the mermaids from? And pretreating generally can be accomplished by wetting the wood. This raises the grain and allows you sand off any problem spots

My wife will not let me put an aquarium in my twin girls room unless it has a mermaid theme would you please be so kind as to let me know where you got the statues

My wife picked them up a year or so ago from: http://nauticaltropical.com/
The part number is C-5506, but I could no longer find the item on the website. I contacted them to see if it is still available.

Take a look at the site, I think you will find something that you'll like.

I bet he will but he's more than likely asleep.
Yes, at least four hours a day is required. :strange:
