Mermaid Stand

Well, skinning this thing has turned into an aggravation :blown:. I got time to work on it a bit more and it seems I'm better at making sawdust than I am at cabinet making. Out of square a 1/8" here, twisted there, short cuts, bad 45's.

I'll get it if it kills me, but damn do I have more appreciation for those who make it look easy.

You gave me a wrench...need some help? What is your tool list? Having a good compound mitre saw, table saw, and router table are really important for good woodworking. I can do anything with those three tools almost.

Thanks for the offer Damon, I may take you up on it after the holidays.

you know the first bra wasnt designed until 1914 you should make it correct to the era ;) just kidding its pretty awesome I wish I had those skills

when we use poplar its considered paint grade. you don't have to grain or very little if any

I agree that poplar is typically painted. I did stain portions of it and it looked decent enough, although I used an atypical bluish green stain. I won't be staining anymore of it until it gets to be 60-70 degrees outside, as the fumes would run me out of the house if I attempted to stain it in the basement. Who knows it may need to be painted to cover all the flaws anyway.

The worst thing about Poplar, IMO, is that it's a soft wood which mars easily. One good thing is it's cheap, so it makes for a good practice run.

Had a little more time to work on the faceplates behind/under the mermaid over the holiday and think I finally got it. One down, one to go. Then on to the doors.

You can also see the stain color. I had the other pieces stained at one time but re-did them numerous times.

Thanks go out to smoothdog for suggestions on how to better construct the faceplates.

Damn, carving skills like that would be a money maker. I would love to have these done in wood if anyone knows somebody with the needed skill set.

Dude...those would be CRAZY expensive. I have some nice lathing abilities but nothing close to carving as intricate as that. Things like the mermaids is why god invented a wood CNC machine.

How about an old school master carver? I would love to be able to duplicate these in wood.
