metal in tank

I think we would all feel alot better about this subject if we knew exactly what the OP was trying to seal. I could see smaller objects being sealed, but big ones... not so much. So about the double post. Just thought this might help out xD

its about the size of my palm and round as a finger

i understand that no one here would put a metal chunk into there tank and thats what makes me wanna do it ....on a safer note anyone got good ideas on a metal looking reef save thing i could use ?

Do it if you want. If it fails it could nuke your stuff. Dont say your didnt know the risk xD. I'd say try it if its really that small though and you want it that bad.

Only metal I know of is stainless steel and its a specific grade I believe.

There are alot more "metals" then stainless steel, and even stainless rust's in saltwater talks. (I have even seen it with stuff that wasn't even touching direct water)

I'm aware of that. I worded my post incorrectly. What I was saying is that is the only metal alloy I know of that is resistant to rusting for a period of time.

When I mean "grade" I depends on the amount of chromium bonded to the steel to make it non-corrosive. I'm well aware there are other metals.

TheCatsWrasse- I can appreciate what you are wanting to do and why. I myself am a HUGE fan of fossils, arrowheads, really anything old so I am pretty sure I would like the piece you are talking about.

Technically I think you could coat it in an epoxy (pricey and difficult to do well) and it would not kill anything if done right.

The problem I see is after it has been in there for 1+ years it will be entirely coated in coraline, encrusting corals, or whatever. Then you will have a really cool relic that doesn't look any different than the rocks that are already in there.

If it was me I would display it on a bookshelf near the tank with other cool antiquities.

Good luck either way. Anyway you could attach a pic? I am interested to see what it looks like now

I wouldnt do it. This hobby is about limiting mistake's, this could be a big one.
Exactly. I understand you think it might look cool, but it's a complete roll of the dice, even if you coat. It maybe you didn't use the right stuff? Maybe you missed a spot? Maybe the coating is too thin in one spot? Maybe? If you roll craps, boom, you loose all your chips and we're likely talking bye-bye reef.

Yeah, you pretty much hit the nail on the hammer with what I was trying to get at. Not worth the risk. Too many variables.
