MH's!!!

The cat's out of the bag so let them see it. Think about it this way, we can not come close to the PAR the sun creates at mid-day so why continue spending all this money if you can use its energy.

How do you guys not have heart attacks when your electricity bill comes in? I don't understand how you guys can afford to have upwards of the 500w lights...

I have 1520 watts of light on my main tank and 970 watts on my 125. I also have heaters and pumps and all the other equipment. Thats why I said I am not raking in the money when I sell my frags. I am lucky if I break even. My electrity is about $60.00 more a month because of the tank and my water bill is also high because of RO-DI. So if anyone thinks they are going to get rich off their tank they are wrong. But if your lucky you may be able to do a little better than breaking even. Don't look at it as a way to make money but look at it as an interesting and different hobby.

Actually Brock the Halides I run raised our electric by about $5 a month. I heard that stuff too and thats why we didnt even look at halides in the beginning. BTW you have T-5s those are perfect for monti caps and zoas, maybe just throw some more on there if you think it's not bright enough. As always, check the RC sellers forum.

Ron are you counting everything? Maybe the halides only raised the bill a little but how about all the other equipment needed to operate a SPS dominant tank. Pumps draw alot of current, so do heaters and the such. I would say of my 60.00 a month tank electric bill, 30.00 of it would be lighting but I do believe I run more lighting than you do.

Yes, I DO have T5's, but I was told in the lighting forum here that since they do not have the individual parabolic reflectors, they are useless...:(

I also want MH's for the "shimmer" effect, and they look socrisp, whereas, my tank always looks brown, and dull...maybe I need different K bulbs...

I'll check which K I have, and post back

Yeh it did'nt raise it much at all Phill.

Yeh you will notice I don't spend much time on other forums on RC, you know why? Because everyone thinks they are experts. Thats why I post questions here, because I know most of the people here and know if they have a clue as to what they are talking about or if they are just trying to be something they are not, which Im happy to say you are in the presence of some knowledgeable individuals who will tell you as they "know it to be" from personal experience. I have seen VHO systems without reflectors that gave great growth. Now don't go buying a clam but you should be able to get some montis to live in there IMO. If you want to try I can get you a frag of the orange one in Rogers tank next meet for a "special members ONLY price" ;)

Try doubling up your lights, add another set like that if you can and you will have great growth and color IMO.

Really? Awesome! So my zoos should start growing soon then? Sweet! Nevermind the MH's then, i'm keeping mine. Thanks for offering to get me the frag too!!! :D

I love small, local groups. You know everyone, and everyone helps you with genuine effort.

Is there anything I could do to get a "crisper" look? My tank looks kinda brownish-yellowish with all four lights on. Maybe 20K?

Brock

Thats a tough one Im afraid. Color mixes close to 14 K should make it a bit nicer but that "crisp" look and shimmer is a product of halides in my opinion.

When I put the MH on my tank for the first time my husband wanted to know why we had ever had anything else.

Maybe i'll get MH's later on, if I ever upgrade my tank to a 125 like i've been wanting to do.

Oh, does anyone want a lunar wrasse? It's probably 4-5 inches, and has lived in my step-dad's tank for a yera now, but it's just too aggressive for the setup he desires. He wants a reef tank.
