Mhucasey's SPS obsession

Which one is the frozen ivy? The new stag?

I've never seen a trade name on the gomezie stag. Also haven't seen them in quite a while. Glad to see they are still being imported.

The second picture is what I know as frozen ivy. But I'm sure is sold under many names. Acropora latistella

Awesome! I'm glad you like it. Whenever you think about missing the shimmer remember that too much shimmer is evidence that the corals are missing out on light. Also you might like that you can clearly see everything, even in the shaded areas. The shimmer plays havok with my eyes, I have a hard time focusing on stuff.:eek2:
I have the light 9" off the top of the tank how far is yours?
Also my cooling fan wont shut off even after the lights go out?

Congrats on the T5 purchase! I'm very interested to hear how you like them and more importantly, how your corals do with them. The reactions people have been having to seeing what old fashioned light technology can do make me happy:) If you follow the very basic guidelines for T5s you can eliminate worry about lighting and start to enjoy your corals!

Basic guidelines:
1) Buy T5s
2) Hang the fixture 10-12" above your aquarium
3) Turn them on

We'll see how it goes. I'm very familiar with the old-school stuff since I started reef tanks in 1990 (MH/VHO - yes, I'm old!). I still have a 20g high nano that was setup in 2004 that's lit with -gasp- PowerPC bulbs!

It'll be interesting to see whether I made the right choice. This tank is a 23 x 23 x 20" rimless cube, so the 8-bulb Sunpower will take up all but 6" of the width of the tank. That's what stopped me from getting the 8-bulb Powermodule - it's 23.5" wide, so light spillover would've been an issue. Besides, I figure I can always run 6 bulbs in an 8-bulb fixture, but not the other way around.

Btw - this is a really neat Acro. Don't think I've ever seen one with that color combo.

Stunning collection of corals you have there Matt.

I'm about 2 months in switching to AF products (probio) and have just got some MicroE. How do you recommend dosing it? As per instructions or half dose? Best in the morning or evening?

Wow Matt , that really is a stunning piece. How are you liking the NP pro on doser?

I agree, but why 10-12"? Mine are like maaaaaybe 5". I'm only running Channel 2 at 50% for 5 hours though. Damn corals are so pale.

Beautiful pics! I really like the purple one with the green corallites, near the end of the photos. Ohh lala.

Based on the PAR values with the bulbs at 100% it can be too much par at lower levels. It also allows the various bulbs to blend better so corals from one part of the reef aren't hit with excessive red or blue.

Since you are running at 50% you should be fine as far as PAR is concerned

If you are hitting the corals with too much light they don't go pale in my experience, they tend to get more brownish/reddish.

Thanks, this Acro is fast becoming a favorite:). As far as the fixture over the cube, the more you can cover the better, but light spill can be a real pain too for the people in the room.

Thanks very much!

I think their guideline of starting at half dose and working up is a good one. I dose most of the items at night after lights out but I don't think it makes a difference.

Wow Matt , that really is a stunning piece. How are you liking the NP pro on doser?

It's working well and it removes dosing it from my routine, which is nice. I can miss everything else but I want to make sure that is dosed regularly. I will probably buy the regular stuff and dilute it next time since the formulation for dosing is more expensive per dose.

Matt, I just bought the dosing size NP Pro, but also have a 50 ml concentrate . What volume RO would I add the concentrate to equal the strength of the dosing formula?

In the AF forum they said 50Ml in 2L.

I haven't looked into it more closely, some people thought that might be incorrect.

There are 20drops per mL, I weighed the NP pro and it weighs 0.048g per drop(Close enough to the standard of 0.050g/drop for water)
So for a 50ML bottle there are 1000drops.

2L of NP Pro for dosing pumps at 5ml/100L dose volume has 400 doses.

So unless Im missing something you need 20mL concentrated NP Pro mixed into 2L of DI water.
