Mhucasey's SPS obsession

I remember reading somewhere that excess Strontium can be a cause of the bubbling you're seeing Matt. I'll see if I can find the link again.

Hope you'll find the reason for that bubbling event buddy:beer:
In the meantime i'm glad things didn't get worse and corals show improvement:thumbsup:

Hey Matt, I have read where some are using the balling method in addition to running a calcium RX, I am wondering if this would be good for you. I think you could tune down the calcium RX and then ball on top. I am seeing amazing results so far using the balling component system, it has been tricky to lock in the right dose, but the response from the corals is top notch. All 3 seem to uptake at the proper ratio, I will confirm with test results, but having the trace dosed daily is really awesome.
Cheers...

I use the BRS 2 part with Fauna Marin 1-3 trace element program added to the BRS 2 part with good results.

I wouldn't rule out going to a mixture of the two but at the moment I think that I have trace elements covered with the CalRX and the other daily trace elements I dose. The colors have been very good, and are improving.

I found another piece of the puzzle as well I think. The two light fixtures(8 and 6 bulb) have different positions for dawn and dusk. On the 8 bulb one of the dawn/ dusk bulbs was the LED tube - so it was on for 11.5 hours per day. On the 6 bulb fixture, the dawn/dusk position was occupied with a Blue Plus bulb. The LED tube on the 6 bulb fixture was only on for the 7.5 hour period where all bulbs are on.

On the side where the LED tube runs 11.5 hours, frags of Acropora Gomezi acquired a dull, dark color - the same thing was happening on the body of the Mr Pacman and the Pink Tabling coral became a dull reddish color. On the other side of the tank, colonies of the same Gomezi coral were lighter and had pronounced blue growing tips. I pulled both LED tubes and replaced them with blue plus bulbs of the same age as the other bulbs from the Flubber tank. I am seeing rapid improvements in the color of the corals and new growth tips popping out everywhere. I don't know if the LED tubes were irritating the corals or just not enough light, but they are banished now.

This was happening well before I dosed any Strontium, and the amount of Strontium I dosed was tiny when I did. Strontium may also cause this issue but I don't think it was the cause in my case.

The corals are recovering Mike, and it was only really affecting a couple of corals here and there, but you know how picky I am:lolspin:

Are you dosing zinc?

I'm dosing 5 drops MicroE which contains Zinc, as well as 4 drops Zinc sulfate solution. The zinc sulfate solution is calibrated to deliver 10% of the required target seawater concentration when dosed 1 drop per 100L, so I'm dosing about 5% of that concentration when I add 4 drops.
Basically I'm dosing a bit more than the full required daily concentration between the two solutions.

I actually had some bubbling recently as well. It happened about a week after raising Mg to 1900. I cut off the affected tips and they seem to be growing back without any bubbles.

I'm pretty confident that the one common theme is high Magnesium. I'm glad you are seeing good new growth.

There has been a marked lack of weiner dogs in this thread lately. Time to correct that oversight.

Flubber tank looking good as well, The Imperator Angel doesn't mess with any of the corals for some reason. I pretty much clean the glass and that's it in here:

garf bonsai is always the hardest to shoot for me so I never post a pic. It's always so fluorescent the pics come out looking super saturated

That garf looks like it got seriously smacked out of it's stupor..
I just love it when a coral wakes up like that.
It must take some serious diligence to properly monitor a ca rx and balling at the same time... I wouldn't try that......

I wish I could straddle the living room couch like Dinkus without embarrassing my daughters and having my wife call me a Dinkus!!

Some pretty sweet acros you got there. I'm gunna look into those aqua forest products. Been seeing some sweet tanks using their products lately. It's definitely got my interest.

I have had the same problem you are having with the bubbling on my acros. I had my water tested by triton, and the only thing that was off was my iodine was really high. I assume from dosing lugols. I've since stopped. The bubbling isn't as bad as it once was. Also I've started dosing potassium nitrate, and it seemed to help as well. (My tank was nitrate deficient. No matter how much I fed, I couldn't get nitrates to a detectable level.) The bubbling is almost completely gone, but I still have a couple acros that are affected.

That GARF is from the original line, and the colony has been rebuilt and regrown twice in the last 4 years. When it really comes around it will be even more intensely colored than that.

That's the best part about having wiener dogs then doubling down with the names we chose- Dinky and Woody- built in comedy!!!

"Time to go outside and drain the Dinky"
"Look Mom, I have a Woody in my lap"

Thanks very much for the compliment!
Would you mind posting your Triton results? What were your values for Calcium, Magnesium, and Alkalinity at the time?

I have a "garf bonsai" but the whole body is a solid deep purple and it grows with a tight cluster and in a bush shale, kind of tables. Everyone around here says it's the original. Yours looks like a different subspecies altogether. Do you think mine is not from the original lineage? I like yours better since it has a lighter base color. Here is a pic from my last tank.

That's a beauty! Mine will look like yours once it colors all the way back up, at one time it was a deep, rich royal blue/purple like yours. There are very similar "Garf Bonsais" on the market, I have one I got through Steve Garrett in the Flubber tank, but this colony comes from a single branch frag I got from Amazing Aquariums and Reefs off the mother colony

Hi Matt,
I have started doing the Zinc and Manganese supplements - all in one solution.
1 gram per 1 litres mixed with rodi water as my final solution.
Dosing 0.5 ml per day and watch see what happen from here.
Once I know what it does to my tank, I am going to make a 3 part solutions to add to the dosing pump.
I want it to add to the 2 part solution with 1 bottle have to be standalone as it can't be mix together.
Similar to what you already seen in AF or FM stuff... hope the formula is solid as I need to do a bit more research on that part.
