Mhucasey's SPS obsession

I have another question before i switched over to LED completely i had a 4 bulb t5 fixture i had over my frag tank i want to start using that again also but the light has only one ballast all bulbs are either on or off so the visual doesnt mean anything being its down stairs only fair growth and color color color only matter in that tank so what do you suggest for that?

I've heard that for color intensity in a frag tank that 50/50 blue plus to Actinic is the best way to go.

I don't use t5 but just out of curiosity, if that is the best mix for a frag tank why not for a display tank... Is because of not enough par from all the actinics?

This has been a great read. Your tanks very nice. Keeps me thinking over and over about T5's. This might be a hard question, but you have a pink coral with brownish
/pink polyps. Do you know the name of it?

Thanks
Zach

Because there is almost zero red or yellow light, so the coral viewing wouldn't be so good. But for Frags, I've heard more than once about using that combo to color them up. It would look like a rave club all the time but the corals would be happy.

Actinics don't produce as much par as a blue bulb but the ATI Actinic was pretty close to the blue plus after burn in. Jedimasterben's ati vs giesemann thread had some good data. Also, Actinics produce a ton of PUR, which is probably just as important as PAR

Thanks very much and welcome to the thread! I can tell you that switching to T5s was the best thing I did for my corals, I have no regrets at all from switching. Can you point me to a post with the coral you are looking for?

PUR is actually more important than par from the studies I have read, and I'm in limbo with switching to an 8 bulb fixture for my cube and canning the hydra.

The T5s are hands-down the best for coloring up SPS - the only downside for some people is the loss of shimmer - but shimmer is not a big thing for me. I think its easier to view the corals without all the flashing personally.

Ahh thanks, colors different from anything I already have.

It's a Slow grower. I got it 2/20/2015 and after a week or so it looked like this:

Compared to now, it just keeps basing and thickening:

What are the parameters in your system and what do you work at keeping them at?

Mg: ~1400-1600(currently 1500)
Ca: >400(currently 420)
KH : 6.5-7.5(currently 7)
NO3: >2pm(currently 10ppm)
PO4: target 0.02, currently 0.04
K: >400(Currently 434)
Salinity:34ppt
Temp: 77F(drifts a degree or two higher during light period)

Should send me a frag of that red one as "backup" ;).

It's been a boring 2 weeks.. I need to buy something!!!!

You should take a trip down to AquaSD sometime - the majority of the frags are 30 bucks and they have thousands of them. They probably have this one in stock actually.

A couple odds and ends I wanted to pass along. First up, the Aquaforest supplements are all formulated to use the same dosing rate of one drop per 100L. Thats pretty smart. However, I had my doubts that one drop - or even seven drops of anything in 200 gallons of system volume would have any effect. Then I turned the lights on when dosing the Coral A(Aminos) and Coral V(Vitamins). One drop is VERY concentrated:

Matt I'm curious. Are you're dosing A and V at full dosage or less ?

I don't know if you ever used Red Sea Reef Energy but it has the same fluorescence when dosed, though it's not as concentrated.
