Mhucasey's SPS obsession

Are you getting springeri damsels? I was planning on getting about 8 for the reported AEFW eating and suposed more mellow nature. Have you heard the same is this why you are getting them?

Colors are looking good, good luck with the new fish!

I have a single yellow tail damsel. I wonder, how much room do they need to keep from killing each other?
Thanks Mark!

I usually shy away from Damsels since they can get mean, but I'm going with the Springeri Damsels since they are pretty, school, are inexpensive, mellow, and might even eat flatworms:thumbsup:

I confirmed mellowness but not flatworm eating from Quality Marine. Then there was a run on them and they were sold out in a couple of days:worried:
I don't have flatworms so if they don't really eat them no biggie for me:)

Ok this is hilarious...Saturday I picked up the four Resplendent Anthias, as well as a Purple Queen Anthias that was hanging with the group. I put them in the tank and they were very jumpy, and 20 minutes later the purple queen vanished without a trace. Aw crap. I figured it jumped and tore the area around the tank apart looking for it with no luck. I searched the tank for it using a flashlight as well, not a trace.

I figured the dogs had sushi when it jumped out.

Guess who came out of hiding tonight?:

@mhucasey Ask Your your dog about the anthias... ;)
Great looking corals.
Try to dose more Coral B. There is no risk to overdose it. You can use double dose for a week and observe. It will help you to "clean" the rocks. You can also try siphoning the cyano. If it will not help maybe chemiclean? Cyanobacteria are toxic for corals...

The imperial reconnaissance drone tang touched down on its flubber landing gear quietly and prepared to scout the filthy rebel cyano swamp system.......

Hi Matt

What is your presurized RO holding tank ? Are those tanks like I have for my well pump ? One more, why are you using that instead of a brute and pumping the water to a mix tank? ....... just curiosity of learning others setup.

Tank looking nice !!!

Daniel

Ps: how many fish you have now in a total volume of......?

Since the Purple Queen came out of hiding I know the dog didn't eat it, but they normally all love sushi, except one. Lily carries the piece of fish around in her mouth but wont eat it or give it up:p

I use and love the coral B every day, but there is only a small amount of Cyano in the system now - 90% is on the two containers of fine sand in the tank. Its slowly receding away. There is not enough cyano to go the chemiclean route at this time.

Its a 4 gallon tank that collects water from RO. Inside is a diaphragm with pressurized air on one side. The diaphragm pushes water out of the tank when you need RO directly or through the DI cartridge. They are typically used for systems where the RO is used as a drinking water source.

The DI flows from there through a float valve into a 2 gallon holding tank, which is where the Tunze Osmolator pump sits. If the Osmolator ever gets stuck on, it drains that tank faster than the DI can refill it and goes into alarm mode. That way I never kill the tank with too much top-off water in the event of a failure of the system.

Right now the SPS tank has:
2 stubby snowflake percula clowns
1 percula clown
1 pajama cardinal
1 Ruby Dragonette
1 Swallowtail angel (Genicanthus melanospilos)
1 indigo dotyback
1 gray head wrasse
1 vermiculate leopard wrasse
2 bangaii cardinals
1 mandarin
9 green chromis
2 Hutchii Anthias
1 Powder blue tang
1 Scopas tang
1 fireclown
1 green wrasse
4 Resplendent Anthias
1 Juvenile Imperator Angelfish
1 purple queen Anthias
BFC = 1.69

So 33 fish total in both tanks - total system volume 195gallons. I have 2 more Anthias and 5 or 6 Springeri Damsels coming this week.

Looking good Matt, more colourful for sure but also a bit pastel looking...
Once you changed the bulbs, did you raise the light fixture at all? Maybe the new combo washes the colours a bit.. I'd par higher with the new bulbs?
Just curious about the new bulb combo and more par plus the AF transition..
Could Coral E be playing a part?
Although, I did see the our rebel counter strike in bigglesjuice land and it was impressive!!

Forgot to ask, Matt.. When using Micro E and Coral E together, is there a certain reduction of dosage since they both contain small amount of copper?
You asked me a while back about whether I had noticed anything from my transition to Aquaforest salt.. Well after a couple months, I'd have to say (like Dan) that my pe is really good. I know how easy it is to be subjective about this but recently, my pe is really outstanding. I'm going to stick with the salt.. This is the first time I have really ever seen a salt make any difference at all.. I do dose pro bio and coral B a couple times a week as well..
Other than the coral food, I'm not yet using any other products from them but I am considering my own bigglesjuice consisting of coral E, micro E and Brightwell's Koralcolor...
Not sure I'm ready to make the plunge, though..

I think the tank is just brighter, I don't really see pastels emerging at this time. Some green corals are finally going to the colors that they started with though, so that is exciting. When I bought some of these, the colors were really cool, but then they sort of greened out.

Out of all the AF additives, the Coral E seems to do the least, to be honest. I don't see much of a feeding response and any lightening of the corals seems to correspond more to the lower PO4 levels than anything else.

I only dose 3-4 drops Micro E. There are several heavy metals in there and I don't want to overdo it. I'm happy to hear you have seen the same PE improvements. I feel this salt is the best I've tried as far as mix-ability, coral response, and parameters. If I was to do future water changes Id probably transition to their reef salt since I dose the bacteria and vitamins. The reef salt is inexpensive comparatively as well.

I dont trust Brightwell Koralcolor, I used it a long time back and saw nothing improve but had some tissue loss in Acros at the same time. KoralColor leads to the dark side...

I think (know) you'd both find that you could stop all the AF dosing except for the -NP Pro and Pro F and your corals would still have great PE. I use them alone with NSW, nothing else being dosed and PE improves significantly. Better response than anything I've tested/run in 30 years in the lab including every other carbon/bacteria on the market.

I'm not suggesting the other supplements aren't helping or that you should stop using them. Just that the PE is from the carbon/bacteria.

Both of you guys have great looking tanks.

Matt the fish are a really nice addition and the Rebellion will definitely kick some @$$

All hail the Aquaforest rebellion!

'Commander don't waste a colony on that acro rabble, send them running back into the cyano swamp they came from with a few growing tips and then continue sweeping this rebel cesspool for anything of value before we obliterate it........'
