Mike's 240 Peninsula Build

The tank looks great and I love the stand. However I cant believe you would complain about a small leave from the skimmer section into the return section then put a great big ugly MP60 powerhead right on a viewing panel. Just doesnt make sense.

Why can't you believe I would mention the small leak from the skimmer section to the return? That leak will mess with my ATO system since water from the skimmer section will constantly enter the return section. Besides, it was a small and very quick fix for John to come out and run a bead of acrylic glue on both sides of the baffle to seal the leak.

This system was not drilled for closed loop nor did I want to run a closed loop so yes, I needed to add a MP60 on the other side of my 8 foot long tank. How else would I get the flow needed without adding a powerhead on that side?

I mention it becase there is obviously attention to detail and you want it to look good. Then you put a big ugly pump on the end of it. You may like it and thats all that counts but as I work down the tank alk I see is a big motor.

A closed loop definatly would have been the best way to do it though I wonder if a dual MP60 set up on each side pointing down to the far end or an MP60 & Tunze combo would do the trick.

Hey Ryan,

I do agree that a closed loop would have been the best way to go but I did not want 2-4 bulk heads at the bottom of my tank. I also didn't want to run an external pump, guess I'm too worried about a possible leak in the bulk head or pump itself.

I just upgraded my MP40w to a MP40es and installed it at the other end of my tank. It was a pita to notch a slot in the wood to fit the wire. Only working with a very under powered rotary tool.

Thanks! The skimmer is dead silent and there is only a slight hum from the return pump only because the pipes are screwed to the steel stand. With the doors closed you don't hear anything. You only get the hum when open the door and sit right in front of the sump.

The MP60 is the loudest piece of equipment on this tank.
 
Ya, makes sense, just got my tank up and running today(the builds under listed on this forum as well) and my skimmer is dead silent, but my return pumps hums a bit. Thats the only noise you can hear, I got some MP40's on the way so Ill see what those add to the noise.

Those Mp40's will add some noise no doubt!
 
Those I'm not to worried about because they are behind the wall, unless they humm. I really want to try and eliminate my return pump humm because its the vibration you hear. I don't know if I just purchased a noisy one or what. I'm using a Water Blaster HY-10000 by Reef Octopus and I'm using it as an internal pump. Wonder if External are any quieter...

Are the MP's more of a humming noise or a fan noise?

Check and see if the water blaster has any rubber feet. If it doesn't, maybe some kind of mat on the bottom of the return pump will help reduce the hum.

Noise from the mp40 depends on what mode and intensity you are running it at. It really just sounds like a motor running lol.


My po4 was .2 during my cycle. I left all my lights off to prevent algae growth. Once my tank was done cycling, I started running GFO and last I checked, po4 is .04
 
The minute this cleaner shrimp went into the tank. He was open for business, there was a line of fish forming waiting to get cleaned. The Bartletts anthias kept bugging the shrimp until the shrimp finally gave it a cleaning lol.

Tank looks great. I'm thinking about getting the same skimmer as u. If u don't mind, Id like to cruise by and see your BK in action. (Sent u a PM) Also, let me know if ur gunna do another live aquaria order, I might jump in on it with ya. Pics look great by the way.
 
Beautiful tank and really nice set up. I just got my hands on a peninsula style tank and am glad to see that some other people are doing close to what I have in mind already. :D
