Mimic Tang tank size

I noticed the sticky doesn't list them, anyone have an opinion?

The one i am most interested in would be the eibli mimic tang. But also the brown/yellow one and any others out there

I think the mimics stay relatively small. A 4' aquarium should do, depending on tankmates.

You won't find anyone better than LA to give you honest, researched info that is written and supported by real experts. LA may be the most used site for basic fish info on this forum. They are quoted constantly.

Mine is in a 5 foot tank, used to be in a 4 foot. Honestly, he is not the most active tang ever so I think a 4 foot would be fine. I've had mine for 2 years now.

I disagree with a lot of what LA has to say. For starters their DD QT process is BS and they even admitted it needs work. I have also seen them list full grown fish sizes and then lost a fish that is several inches longer than what they state it can actually grow. I have also see them list smaller aquarium sizes for fish that obviously need larger tanks. They have fixed most of those within the past year though.

+1. I've been sending them contradictions within their own posts. For example in the paragraph it would say 300 gallon and quick stats would say 180. I also sent them an email to correct their foxface sizes. They still have other mistakes though.

I see that a lot. Like for most angels it seemed like they copy and pasted the description paragraph...

So i still have not found an answer as far as my tank goes, some here are saying 4' is okay, but 4' 55g???

I recently lost a minic tang in a 4' tank (270 gallons) that was in the tank when I bought it 5 years ago. It seemed fine.

I would hesitate to put any tang in a 55 gallon tank. FWIW, I don't think it's good for the fish in the long term. Quite aside from that, though, I think it skews your display and makes the whole tank look cramped when you've got a fish that's sort of outsized.

Better to stick with smaller fish, IMO.

+1. There are a lot of good smaller fish options. How come you want the Mimic, maybe we can suggest something?

I have just updated the minimum tank size for Acanthurus tristis and Acanthurus chronxis to 125 gallons in an effort to recommend that enough swimming space is provided when mature. The fish can reach 25 cm (10") in the wild and can come close to that size in a captive environment.

jaa1456,
Regarding our Divers Den animals, we take great pride and work diligently to offer a value added animal to the marketplace. I feel we go above and well beyond the vast majority of retailers in the US by quarantining, conditioning and ensuring the animals are in the best possible condition prior to sale in the Divers Den section of LiveAquaria.com. Additionally we stand behind everything we sell by offering a 14-Day money back customer satisfaction guarantee.

As far as listing fishes that are physically larger than the "Maximum Size" listed in the "Quick Stats" for fishes, this can and does happen as different resources choose to list the maximum size of fishes differently. SL- Standard Length is the most common (tip of snout to caudal peduncle), where others use FL- Fork Length (tip of snout to fork at the soft caudal fin), and lastly TL- Total Length (tip of snout to tip of soft caudal fin). We choose to list fishes in Total Length so customers are well aware of the exact size of the fish from the tip of the nose to the end of the soft caudal fin. Once again if you ever see a blatant error please feel free to email us at CustomerService@LiveAquaria.com and we will address it promptly.

Happy Fish Keeping everyone!
