Mindstream aquarium monitor???

What do you all think of the mindstream tank monitor ??

I am thinking it would definitely be a cool thing to have for the lazy man;)

yeah I dont want to have to spend an extra 30-50 every month for it just to change out the wheels. It has its place if you can afford it.

What do I think?
It's too expensive for what I would need (like) from it. Temperature, pH and salinity can be done for much cheaper, oxygen, CO2, ammonia, and potassium are not useful to me as I don't test them, so essentially it turns into a continuous calcium, alkalinity and magnesium checker which while nice, the price of the unit plus replacement discs is too much for me. Plus it simply monitors, if there was some controller functionality to it then it would be quite a bit nicer. You could use a CaRX or 3 part solution as needed to keep the levels you want, rather than trying to make a really educated guess.

But that's just me, I could also put the Apex into a similar category, as currently it would be a really expensive light timer for me as I don't have a need for the other functions it does :)

If it works as claimed, it will revolutionize the hobby again like LED and controllers did. Imagine how many people that wants to get into the hobby but don't want to deal with the technicality of testing/dosing would benefit from this. Or, remember how many tanks have crashed due to the time constraint of the hobbyist. These two reasons alone will bring in a slew of new hobbyist and keep them in the hobby. Prob one device that I really believe will make a big change that we need.

I agree. I read up on the device and it sounds like it's going to be a great unit. My understanding is that the team has put in the time and effort to make something that actually does what it claims to do. That said, I agree that it's going to be expensive for what it does. I'm bad at monitoring my parameters (aside from temperature and pH taken care of by my Apex), and for the most part I just look at my tank to tell me if something is wrong. I control almost everything through my Apex and hope that the Mindsteam will one day be able to communicate with the Apex to create a truly hands-off monitoring and delivery device.

Great idea for company, bad on the general consumer end:)

Though the general consumer appears to be the main target at this point, it also sounds like they're targeting institutions and large corporations that need to monitor water quality. Once the concept catches on, I hope that the price for the discs will drop where it makes more sense for the consumer. I'm typically not an early adopter, so I'm willing to wait this one out.

Its not bad except as mentioned above. Should've had phosphate or something vs the other useless parameters.

The cost is really high...its like paying for dog insurance...The only thing that stopped me from getting in is the lack of response on their kickstarter page.

They said that for the phosphate, it is very difficult to do:

We know that Phosphate is also a key reef tank parameter and it is an important development priority for us as well. However, we anticipate developing a Phosphate sensor that does not use reagent technology will be especially complex and difficult to achieve.

The more we can monitor the better. I back this product and will show support and hope that a no3/po4 solution comes up in the future!
