Minh's Purple S. gigantea

Moved on
Wednesday 07/25/2012 I shell out big bucks and got this purple S. gigantea at Aquarium Masters here in Coprus Christi, TX.

The down side to this anemone is that it is bleached, but not completely so, and that it does not look too healthy. The tentacles are small somewhat retracted. I did not see it prior to a few days before I bought it but was told that it lost some color and become lighter since the LFS got it. It was also, IMO, not under adequate light and circulation. Erick at the AM does not feed anemone in the store normally so I don't think he feed this anemone either.
The up side to this anemone is that it got imported directly from Indonesia and have been in the LFS since 5/1/2012. I also have come by after work for a few days (10 days I think) and did not find it deflated the several days in the late afternoon in the fish store.

I wanted to trade corals and clams for this anemone because I can ill afford the cost of this anemone and was not sure that I can keep him alive long term. How ever knowing that this anemone living in his store for several months and knowing how bad I want a S. gigantea, wanted money only, no trade:). I can't blame him. They got to make a living too. He did decrease the price "just for you".

I got my 30ish gallon cube (20X20X18 outer dimensions) tank that I have set up for several years, lighted by a 150W Aqua Pod that I have running with nothing in it except a blue damsel and some snails. It is full of macro algae, deep sand bed and some rock. I clean up this tank over the weekend. I did a 100% water change, remove the rock, vacuum the sand and scrub the rock. Got rid of almost all the macro algae, and remove the damsel. This tank also have a CPR skimmer on the back. This is where I put the heater and temp probe.

I brought the anemone home on 7/25/2012. I was told that the anemone arrived to the LFS on 5/1/2012.

I attempted to keep S. gigantea for many years. Total about 5-6 times in the past 14-15 years. Of all of these times I was semi successful one time but the anemone was killed when the breaker switched off at work for the weekend. The office cleaning crew knocked some equipment when they mopped the floor on Friday night and I did not find out until Sunday when I came into the office Sunday AM to do some work. The tank was 90% lost and I was able to keep the anemone alive for about 4 weeks after that event but it was all downhill spiral. Lost all my SPS and Xenia. A few clams and a few corals survived.

Anyway. Below are a few pictures of the first few days in my tank. The total tank picture to show circulation. I don't think the circulation is optimal. I have ordered the Vortech MP10w to put in the tank to improve circulation. It should arrive on Monday or Tuesday of next week. I even paid 39 dollars for airship it to me. I have a Finnex heater on the tank to keep temp at about 84 degrees but also order a heater controller unit with the heater to keep tighter control of this small aquarium. I have learn from Rod, who keep several Gigantea longer than anybody I know, that Gigantea like warmer temp. I also asked Gary who also keep his multicolored Gigantea for many year about the temp of his tank. Gary keep his tank at about 80 but can get as high as 84.
This tank is at home where I can keep an eye on it every day and tighter controls on all the possible variables. I will not be able to observe it as much on the day to day basis.

I have not put one of my clown pair with this anemone yet. In a few weeks, when the anemone is more establish, if it is still around I will put a pair of clown in.

I fed it about 1 cc of chopped shrimp this AM. It ate all of the shrimp in a few minutes.
I will update this thread every so often.

:):)Wish me luck everybody:):)

You are right, besides being a little bleached, it looks to be in really good shape. Good news that it is eating as well. I especially like that you gave it is own tank. I think that is important for gigantea.

Good luck!

Initially I placed it on the top of the rock in the middle of the tank, knowing that it will move but not knowing which direction it will move. Once it move to under the rock, I move the rock so that the anemone is in the middle of the tank, where the focus of water movement and light is at. Change of position of the rock can be seen between the first picture and other pictures. Otherwise everything is still the same as when I put him into the tank.

Thanks Phil.

niice! On the note of gigs liking higher temps.. I recently have been keeping my first gig and my tank runs from 78 in thee morning and gets up to about 82 by the time the halide kicks off.. maybe it is rather important for gigs.. mine is doing great!

Good luck brotha!

That will be a beauty once it regains its full color. I'm sure you will do fine getting it back up to the peak of health. Best of luck.

Thanks Gary.

I never able to observe Gigantea behavior at night before. Tonight and last night the anemone is retracted a little at night in compare to what he looks like during the day under full light. He is not deflated, just smaller and stiffer.

I sure hope my Vortech MP10w get here soon. It is my hope that I will be able to use this to provide optimal flow for him.

This AM with the light turn on, he inflated again back to normal and mouth is tight and small. At night his mouth is about almost 2.5 cm but not open. During the day the mouth is 1 cm or less. I fed him another 1 cc chopped shrimp again before work. He ate it quickly. Looks normal before work today.

Good luck Minh!!!!!!!!

Like the others have said, it looks pretty good for a gig straight off the boat.

Glad to see that you are feeding it. I fed mine pretty much every day for about six months when I first got it. It was bleached as bad, if not worse, than yours and now it's huge and healthy as a horse.

Thanks.

I was looking at the tank after work today. Circulation right now in the tank is poor. My Vortech won't arrive until Wed. Only the top 1/3 of the anemone have adequate water movement. The lower 1/3 have hardly any movement at all. The anemone is lower in the tank and face forward.
Thinking about improve circulation, I moved the two Koralia down and toward the front of the tank. Also I point it a little down and a little forward to the front glass. I also move the light to the near the front of the tank. Both of the result in much more even flow to the whole anemone top to bottom. The anterior light and reflection from the front glass also result in much more light to the whole anemone. The sand got disturbed due to the new flow pattern so the water is slightly cloudy right now. I will take some picture in the next few days. I am sure I will also get picture when the Vortect setup.

I am much more happy with the circulation and light now. Even without the Vortech, I think circulation is adequate at this time. I think the programmable Vortect will be much better when I finally set it up.

hey Minh,

to answer your question in my thread, yes i think the mp10 would do great in a 30g. it will be enough flow.

my gig was in a biocube 29 before i upgraded to my elos 70 and i had an mp10 on that and it did well in that flow.

Your gig looks great for coming off the shores. It looks like it had some color loss, but not horribly in any matter. My gig looked exactly like yours when I first got it. Now its very deep in purple and has been a great looker. It took me about 3 months to get it turned around and a total of 6 months to get it a deep purple.

Got my Vortech MP10 and got it in the tank. I have to move the rock around a little and the pump kick up a bit of sand. The tank is somewhat cloudy right now but here is a picture.
I fed him two days skip one day and fed him again this AM. I fed him shrimp shell and all. He spit out a piece of shell devoid of any flesh on it so I think he is eating well and digest the shrimp well. I will try to feed him squid a fish some other time.
I leaving for 10 days this Friday. I hope if he move around he will do it by then. I won't be home to take care of any disaster. The tank sitter will just add water to this tank and feed my other tanks. This tank does not have an auto top off system. No fish so no daily food. I just added a few snails to this tank because it grew some algae without any herbivorous. Too bad I have to use a flat piece of rock for him to attached, it really looks out of place in compare to the rest of my rocks in this tank

Here is the picture:

I see that you did not put the foam cover over your mp10.. if you are leaving i HIGHLY recommend you do so. i believe d-nak or bonsai just had one of their gigs pulled into their vortech.
