have you seen the totally red tapetums?
Pattern/coloration can help determine mature size to some extent.
Sprung identified these for me after Borneman and Shimek pretty much drew a blank.
Although they're currently still considered the same species (to the best of my knowledge) I would not be surprised if minis and maxis were named separate species someday.
Funny you mention Sprung Gary since that is where Dave got his information from. We spoke to him at MACNA about the Maxi's and he described them as S.tapetum. When we asked about the smaller variety that multiplies, he said it was the same, S.tapetum.
