Minimalistic multichip DIY LED build

Yes, I would say not any tighter beam than 60 degrees or you will get the ol' Disco effect.. :) And yeah, dont use lenses for the 10W's if you decide to use them, it will be nicer with a very diffuse blue light I think.

This will take care of the 50W cooling: http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/cooling/vga/425/accelero-l2-plus.html?c=2182

Sorry, do you mean "not to use them it would be nicer?" and is the heatsink link for the 10w chips or will it also cool the 50w chips? Thanks---Rick

I mean, use lenses for the 50W:s only. IF you decide to use the 10W RB's for dusk/dawn light dont use lenses on them.

The cooler I posted a link for is only for the 50W multichip. For the 10W chips you can use something smaller, like a passive heatsink without a fan.

Thanks Maglo for the answers.

Good video. I caught everything except how many fans that wall wort will drive. :-)

I ordered two 9" heatsinks from rapid I was thinking of putting 2 50w lamps on each. You think one fan is enough on each heatsink?

Also do you like the coloration of the combo led vs one blue and one white? I have the one blue 50w over a 20 long and it covers the tank well without optics and makes the corals fluorescence very well but is too blue for my liking.

One fan is enough. What you should think about is what happens if the fan (when really) fails. If the passive cooling will cope, then no problem. Remember to push the airflow downwards against the heatsink!

Yes, I like it very much! I think pure blue is also very attractive, but my SPS don't think so when it comes to growth. They need light at different wavelengths to really thrive. So for me the combo chip is the ultimate! :)

Thank you sir. The plan is to use a temp monitor that will shut down the lights once a set temp is reached on the heatsink.

I'll go ahead an order one of the combo lights. If it works well I'll go with four of those rather than the two blue and two whites.

Great video Maglofster....... Now lets see if I understand the LED size concept. I have been told I would need a 36 led set up. This would equal out to a total of 78watts.(3wX36=78w) So if I where to purchase a 50w combo and place it in the center and then put a 20w on each side (not sure of the colors) and dim them down with a pot. I should have more than enough light for my set up. What deg. optic would you suggest and also dimable drivers. Also color for the 20w? Thanks and keep up the great work.

P.S. Have you used these leds on your SPS yet. Are you getting good growth?

Tell me more about the tank! Size, scape and so on?

Yes, SPS growth is good. This is a video from my tank with mentioned LED's

Beautiful Tank!!!!!!!! My tank is a 46 gal. bowfront, 36"L X 18"D X 15"? at the widest point. I have about 50 lbs rock with SPS and softies. Right now I have an 36" (18 X 3w) 50/50 Reefbrite LED and 4X 36" T-5 for lights. Everything is doing fine under these lights but I'm getting VERY little to no growth. All perimeters are good. What I'm looking for is of course is good growth and to be able to dim the LEDs with a controller when I build it. For now I will have to be able to adjust the multichip with a pot. Would you suggest 2 X 50w or 1 50w and 2 X 20w. I also checked out the site you posted and could not find the exact LED you where talking about. I would also need to know what driver and Deg. lens to put on them. The light would be placed in a hood hanging above the tank with a glass splash gaurd. Hope this is what you need.
Thanks, Ed

stormrider 27, I would like a complete noob guide for your led lights. I am sure i will have varied size tanks to put the leds own. SAo all your help and guidance will be appreciated plus various vendors for the parts. Thanks, Mike384

I think this would work just fine:

Edit: Just realized that you need to dim with pot first and then by pwm. Anyone has a tip for a driver?

Really cool video and music!! Beautiful Tank, I like your clean bottom look, your tank is really artful. Its energizing to see what one can accomplish. Thanks for sharing.---Rick

First version of my lights are up and running. In the end i chose to only use one 200W driver and two 50W drivers. So it's 2x100W RB / 10K white and 2x50W 10K white at the moment. Sorry for making such a crappy video, but I couldn't be bothered to bring out my real camera after building this stuff, doing the Noob video guide, watching the Eurovision Song Constest, going to the recycling station, the store, a gardening store + planting 8 kinds of chili this weekend.. :)
