Mixing different variations of same species??

New to the hobby and just wondering if it was ok to mix say a black and white percula and regular or a regular percula with a snowflake?? thanks!!

There aren't any black and white perculas. Those are a natural variation of ocellaris clownfish, found only on the coast of Darwin, Australia. You can pair any color variation of ocellaris together, as long as you only have one female. Some people have also successfully paired ocellaris (black and white or the others) with percula clownfish--Sanjay Joshi is one example.

Percula and ocellaris are in the same family and can cross breed. Just be sure you only have one female. I have a female cinnamon and a male tomato living together in a condy anemone. I haven't seen any eggs yet, but they are only just over a year old.

yes, any of the nemo looking fish to keep it simple. any of the perc or occ variants can be paired up.

I have a large 363g reef 7 feet long and i have a pair of bicinctus clownfish, a pair of onyx clownfish, 1 ocellaris, and a sebae clownfish. and they get along and swim together and also share a tiny rbta without fighting. So it really depends on the size and length of your tank.

I'm curious to know how long these clowns have been together in this tank. Are any of them spawning? How old are they?

I would urge you to keep like species together for pairing. Regional variants OK. I don't like keeping "designer clowns" but there are clearly many who do not share my view.

Generally speaking, if you have more than two clowns in one tank you end up with two clowns in the tank. I know there are exceptions and I have been one such exception but you don't know what's going on in that tank beyond what they want to convey to you. In my observation/experience, success is generally short lived. When a pair starts settling down they will not want any potential competition within view and their aggressions may not be limited to other clowns. I've kept 4 and five species in a tank at once but not generally more than a few months. So, I don't advise it. I've also watched my clarkii grab a large, healthy yellow tang by the pelvic fin and drag him from one side of my 6' tank to the waiting tentacles of an anemone on the other side of the tank.

To get past the trade name confusion, show us a pic of your fish so we can ID it for you as Darwin ocellaris or Solomon Island percula.

It's an A. percula. Trade names are debatable (I think that one is a snowflake) but it's not a "black and white." That trade name is reserved for A. ocellaris from Darwin Australia. See below.

I agree.. Trade names are completley arbitrary, and dependent on who produces them, even when the same variant is produced multiple times..

The fish above is technically a "platinum" but, the guy at UMaine produced the same variant and calls them "blizzards" same fish, different breeder, so different name.. When I get mine to breed ill call them "panda" percula just for fun..

They are just percula to me, that are colored black and white.. :)

Trade names are dump to me. Just a vendor's way of drumming up business. (To designer breeder) Please just keep your abominations out of the bloodline.

BTW, Here's a pic of Solomon Island Perculas.
