Modern Reef Aquariums

At this point can we call modern design just anything we haven't seen before or hasn't been widely accepted? Is it about using new techniques or attempting something new even in a traditional setting?

I'm not sure if anybody posted these pics yet (I cant see allot of the pictures posted at my work) but these are some pretty modern tanks. I'm not to sure how I feel about these tanks but they are modern.

A misconception about modern design is that it is what is new and current. However, modern design doesn't neccessarily equate modern "times." Actually the modern era ended a while back.

so now that the thread derailing stopped (i also blame myself for it)...anybody with ideas on a lamp stand or wall mounted articulating arm for a pendant holder ?? modern looking because its the modern thread :)

I found some cool surgical lights on ebay,..but they are extremely expensive

I know Elos makes some that I believe can either be free standing or mounted to the wall/stand. I haven't seen pictures though so you might ask Jesse. There is also the zeroedge lamp tree that was posted earlier.

Glassbox got my head rolling with his posts. I'm thinking about doing this design for the future tank. What do you guys think (rendering kinda sux). It is a contemporary design with modernesque features (the overall boxyness, metal tube legs, etc..)

Looks good Will,...the only problem,...you cant fit much in that stand and you would have to sit pretty close to the ground to look at the tank

Will,

lm glad you posted that up here

Mac,
I have a feeling most people who would have a tank like the one Will designed will have adequate seating for it ;)

Will,

If the stand is freestanding and not adjacent to a wall, it may be difficult to find acceptable filtration equipment that will fit underneath the cabinetry, assuming a sump is used. Efficient protein skimmers are generally tall...

(I think my comment also goes for E&F, now glassbox design) ;)

I'd be interested to see how the filtration layout would work in the above designs :)

Also, as a side note...

Aquarium cabinetry that contains a sump generally needs to be well ventilated for humidity, heat, ect. issues.

Something to consider in the 360 degree view aquarium designs... Just ask Nano Guy ;)

Will I think it looks great!

I remember a long time ago, I had posted an idea in the DIY section about having a stand that was only 1.5' tall for a 125G tank I wanted to put in my bedroom. The idea was to have the stand match the exact height of my bed which is very basic...really just a big block on the ground. The tank was going to be against the wall and the bed right up against it...anyways, people thought I was crazy because of the height. I LOVE low stand and tanks, theres something so appealing to me. Maybe because I also love low, minimal furniture...

Theres a lot of question about filtration because its a nano but I find that generally nanos do not have crazy filtration and often do not have sumps. I assumed that was the case here.

Looks great!

Thanks for the comments guys,

I like the proportion with lower tank stands. There is something dramatic I think.

The stand is going to serve as a penninsula of sorts with the left end sitting against a wall. As for the filtration, I plan on routing that into the closet that the stand will sit against. In the closet/fish room I think I want to have a sump and frag tank.

If your home had a basement, it would be awesome if you could use one of those legs to hide the plumbing going up to the tank, and use another leg to hide the drain line.

Of course, those legs better be amazingly strong and the flooring better be able to support all that wait on four focal points.

haha, one of my coworkers has his condo filled with several of those exact chairs (even has some high-stool version too).

they look cool, but everybody who sits in them nominates them for more uncomfortable chair ever.

WZHang, love your new tank concept!

Justin,
I would love to see a large tank low to the ground. I think it would be stunning.

Yeah I have been thinking about that idea for a while now. It would be like sleeping with your fish! I have a few drawings I did a year or so ago of it, I will try to find them...might be hard in all the piles of drawings I have at my desk though :/

I have never sat in those chairs but my fiance and I used to own a set of Barcelona Chairs (same era) that were incredibly comfortable. I wish we had never sold those :(
