Modern Reef Aquariums

Wow, what a beatiful place to work! Was your planted tank in Amano's contest? It looks familiar.

Beautiful tanks...both of them. Do you have the planted tank posted somewhere where we can get some more info on it?

i like the colored loc line very nice and actually a reference to the industrial bckground of loc line which i think fits in very well in this thread. Nice work on both tanks so far!

Beautiful systems berleinchmit, I love how everything complements each other so nicely. Could we get a better shot of your FW tank?

Hello guys,

You are too kind. Thank you.

Marc, yes, indeed you have them. I understand why you don´t choose the coloured loc-lines when you have the black ones. In a black background and black overflow, a black loc-line would be more discrete, thus, aesthetically better. The coloured ones are more difficult to pass by undetected but, after a while, we get used to it and look more into the tank than into the dispersors. Still, I am only 100% happy with it when I have much more inside the tank to look at, besides rock.

Puttyman, no, I have not sent this tank to Amano´s Contest because I set it up in September. Maybe I´ll sent it in 2009, if has matured enough until then.

This year´s contest, I have sent this one:

ReefWaters, yes, you can see more info and step-by-step photos of my current FW tank in my Blog. Here goes the link -
" 112L Planted Tank"

Kigs, sure. Here it is. The picture was taken in 23th October. I do have updated ones in the camera ( taken a couple days ago) that I have to pass to the computer and proceed edition. I will do that as soon as I have some time. I will then post here.

And, with this post, I hope I am not doing too much off-topic and ruining the thread. I wouldn´t want that.

Thanks Mark...I wanted to add a personal touch and that wooden box was ugly without it :)

Did you carve it/make it yourself?

I see your running a CL system, bit what is that large centered drain screen thing for?....
Can you show some more pix up close of your plumbing and sump?...

thanks cet98...the tank is glass and the dims are 36x24x24. Closed loop is powered by a dart with an oceans motion 4 way, the drain is 2" for closed loop and there are a total of 4x1" returns. here are some more shots of the tank and plumbing

Wow, awesome freshwater planted tanks. I've got a shot in my gallery of one I had a while ago, in a starphire rimless.

I'm setting up a new 85g starphire rimless in my livingroom and I went back and forth about whether to make it a high end planted tank or reef, as a well-designed planted tank is as breathtaking as any reef system, imo. However....I decided on SPS primarily because of all the trimming I had to do on my prior freshwater system! Happy plants tend to grow super fast and when you trim, you have to do it artfully so the plants don't look butchered. Like giving your tank a haircut, lol.

Yeah thats one of the reasons I went to a reef as well, I got sick of spending a half an hour every Saturday sculpting back the plants with scissors and then netting out all the trimmings. They are gorgeous tanks though, someday I'd like to get another one going.

Maybe a more minimal aquascape with low-growing plants wouldn't be as much work.

cet98 - Answering the question you asked Tigerarmy40: That big strainer in the back of the tank is to prevent livestock from being sucked against the draining bulkhead. By making the surface area larger with more holes, they have the abilty to swim or crawl away unscathed. That type of strainer is sold at www.Savko.com

Hiya DT's_Reef. I've not seen any of your posts in a long time! Where have you been hiding? Link me to your current tank, please.

hey tigerarmy40, thanks for the pix!!!...
great set up you have there...can u tell me the thickness of your galss?...I am in the planning stage of my 52gal rimless cube (24wx24dx21h)and I am curious what other people select regarding glass thickness...is there any visible deflection in the sides???....

thanks melev!!!....great site info, thanks
I've always been impressed by your tanks and your site, so any information from you I consider "golden"... :D

thanks again

Heya! Uhm...I've been in a black hole of reefland for quite some time. Doing some remodeling and thought it's time to get back into the fray in a serious way (no rhyme intended!).

No intention to hijack this thread, but my brand new set-up is shown in this thread:

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1530025

I have it filled with water and sand, and will be transfering over the animals/rocks tonight. Ali's coming over tonight to help with the aquascaping....what a guy! I'll post more pics.
