-Ching,
Cool concept, love the 3d rendering. Was that done with 3ds max?

Heres some other concepts Iv'e been playing with.

WOW! Nice concept!

But?? How to build a Tank that does not fail, with no support under the edges { will not the bottom panel fail??

posted my tank empty on this thread a while ago... here it is "filled up"

Ok, so now I want some of that coral.

Is that just "regular" red table acro?

Is that blue chalice or monti cap?

What kind of purple acro is that on the right?

Is it a birds nest?

One question, why does the tank have an overhang on the sides? It looks cool but I don’t see any benefits.

It's mainly for aesthetics (wow factor). I don't think I've seen someone try this so why not?

crazzy-

I think the bottom panel could be built with 3/4"-1" thick glass or acrylic and not fail. It depends on how big the tank is.

if not going BB and not really seeing through the bottom anyway, could make some surface or support. I'd prefer to see through though, have it sticking out , just because that's too sweet. really awesome design there wzhang.

yep just a regular pink/red millie... one of the first 3 sps frags i ever got though, that colony is going on 3years old! it looked nothing like that when i bought it lol, it has lost a little of its color since i added that sand, im hoping its just a phase though... (pic was taken a day or 2 after the sandbed was added to a previously bb tank)

on the left is a purple with blue polyps monti, i got it a few months after the millie. its not "name-brand" either as far as im aware.

on the right you are correct is a birdsnest(i was told it was ora from the guy i bought it from but who knows). looks more pink than purple in person though.- ;)

modernism

modernism

First let me say hi! I 've been lurking on here for awhile just reading threads while I plan my system. This is my first post ever , so you know this thread is special haha!

Anyways, when I started looking at tanks and equipment (particularly lighting fixtures and stands), I was surprised by the very obvious lack of good aesthetic design in most of the products I came across. And after looking at countless build threads, I was often impressed by what was inside the tank, but not impressed by the look of the tank itself or how it was integrated into the room.

I like this thread because it points to the future of the hobby, it addresses the desire to create a system that looks just as good as what is inside of it. The thread itself is, ironically, just about the definition of modernism. Some of the models people created at the beginning of the thread-I didnt see much of that later on-are much better than most of what is being sold right now!

Elos and ADA though seem to have captured this thought very well, and they seem to be making a fortune off of it! I agree with some previous posters that the ADA stuff looks pretty good. The guy who created ADA-Takashi Amano-creates some absolutely amazing plated FW tanks. In terms of being able to manipulate the aquarium's inhabitants to create a cool display, I think the planted tanks absolutely dominate. Some real "zen" going on in his tanks!

One thing I wanted to mention-I am surprised this was glossed over-is that german tank on about pg 38 of the thread. The long tank sitting directly on the floor. To me, the design of that tank is far superior to just about every tank posted on here. It's simply incredible. But more importantly, it seems to me to be quite modern in design. It has progressed beyond the need for a stand by simply eliminating it. The tank looks clean and very minimal, especially considering it being rimless. The equipment is hidden and there is little exposed wiring. The lighting is pretty sleek too, although I personally like the look of articulating lamp fixtures myself. The rockwork isn't too imposing. It's a great tank!

Haha I figured my first post on here would be a question about water changes or something, and here I am talking about design aesthetics! I just wanted to re-mention that tank :)

Here's the link to it:

Oh, and also, I think it would be fun for us to try and isolate specific design elements which contribute to a good looking, modern tank. We've seen enough good examples right? Ideas on the living part of the system are good too.

Examples:
-a rimless tank of interesting or unusual dimensions
-a tank that can be viewed from all sides and above
-cultivating macroalgae, to add bright color and form
-interesting fish (enough clowns already! jk!)
-less live rock in the display and more in the sump
-sparsely stocking with coral and allowing them to grow out
-prune your coral to create interesting shapes as opposed to just fragging it
-a stand that doesnt look like a "stand"

keep in mind that form must follow function! a nice lighting fixture but dead corals is obviously poor design.

Great first post!

[welcome]

I do like the look of a modern tank, but don't necessarily have the desire to maintain one like what we've seen in this thread. The one thing that makes them look modern to me is how clean they are, and once a tank has gotten established, it can be quite challenging to keep that clean look. You have to be willing to dedicate quite a bit of time to those tiny details that make the difference between excellent upkeep and just getting by.

I totally love that exact tank you are referring to, and was looking at those pictures on Page 38 last night. It is a sweet system, and while huge doesn't overpower the room like it would on a stand with a canopy. It feels more interactive to me.

Oh, and regarding your other question:

;)

Wow thanks for the quick reply! I got my swimming-fish-animation-thingy :D

Yeah, I've noticed that all of the tanks pictured so far have been really clean! Since I dont have a tank yet, I can only guess at the kind of work needed to keep a tank looking very clean like that. I guess I'll be finding out soon enough though...

Regarding the german tank, it is definitely the lack of a stand that does it for me. I like the idea of being able to look down on a tank like that. On the other hand, it seems like the tank is tall enough that if you sat on a low chair, you would be close to eye level with it. If there were a stand, it would just detract from viewing that tank. As is, you can view the tank from all angles un-interrupted-I think thats a standard we should all be aiming at!

It seems like many stands are just excessively large, they end up dominating the tank. It is a good design that is large but still manages to showcase the tank. ZHWANG seems to be getting there with his last models. Just my two cents!

Oh and thanks for the resource on water changes!!

Any further infor about the "stand" of the tank on page 38?
How was it constructed?

other people said they had success translating the site into english using google translator, but i couldnt get it to work for me. i believe somebody mentioned that the floor where the tank is sitting had extra support from below (in the basement). either way, thats a strong floor huh :)

i cant be sure about that though because i cant read german ;)

who is the artist for the art above the tank - sweet studio - best I have ever seen
