modernism
modernism
First let me say hi! I 've been lurking on here for awhile just reading threads while I plan my system. This is my first post
ever , so you know this thread is special haha!
Anyways, when I started looking at tanks and equipment (particularly lighting fixtures and stands), I was surprised by the very
obvious lack of good aesthetic design in most of the products I came across. And after looking at countless build threads, I was often impressed by what was
inside the tank, but not impressed by the look of the tank itself or how it was integrated into the room.
I like this thread because it points to the future of the hobby, it addresses the desire to create a system that looks just as good as what is inside of it. The thread itself is, ironically, just about the definition of modernism. Some of the models people created at the beginning of the thread-I didnt see much of that later on-are much better than most of what is being sold right now!
Elos and ADA though seem to have captured this thought very well, and they seem to be making a fortune off of it! I agree with some previous posters that the ADA stuff looks pretty good. The guy who created ADA-Takashi Amano-creates some absolutely amazing plated FW tanks. In terms of being able to manipulate the aquarium's inhabitants to create a cool display, I think the planted tanks absolutely dominate. Some real "zen" going on in his tanks!
One thing I wanted to mention-I am surprised this was glossed over-is that german tank on about pg 38 of the thread. The long tank sitting directly on the floor. To me, the design of that tank is far superior to just about every tank posted on here. It's simply incredible. But more importantly, it seems to me to be quite
modern in design. It has
progressed beyond the need for a stand by simply eliminating it. The tank looks clean and very
minimal, especially considering it being rimless. The equipment is hidden and there is little exposed wiring. The lighting is pretty sleek too, although I personally like the look of articulating lamp fixtures myself. The rockwork isn't too imposing. It's a great tank!
Haha I figured my first post on here would be a question about water changes or something, and here I am talking about design aesthetics! I just wanted to re-mention that tank
Here's the link to it:

Oh, and also, I think it would be fun for us to try and isolate specific design elements which contribute to a good looking,
modern tank. We've seen enough good examples right? Ideas on the living part of the system are good too.
Examples:
-a rimless tank of interesting or unusual dimensions
-a tank that can be viewed from all sides and above
-cultivating macroalgae, to add bright color and form
-interesting fish (enough clowns already! jk!)
-less live rock in the display and more in the sump
-sparsely stocking with coral and allowing them to grow out
-prune your coral to create interesting shapes as opposed to just fragging it
-a stand that doesnt look like a "stand"
keep in mind that form must follow function! a nice lighting fixture but dead corals is obviously poor design.
