Modification of Maxijet Powerhead

Anyone do this with a 50 gallon or smaller? My concern is that the sand bed would get pushed and pulled around. Is it so turbulent that the sand getting thrown around the tank? Or since they are not hung by suctions but the hang on clip are they high enough to kill the dead spots without kicking up the sand? Also, how many modified maxijets would one put on a sumpless 50 gallon?

Man - no one seems to carry micro/mini jets. I had to settle and buy 2 of the Hagen 101 mini powerheads. "Supposedly" 80 gph but I can barely feel the water comming out. Its odd cause a Maxi Jet 600 at 160 gph is putting out alot more than twice as much water as the 101. Might have to break down and order them online. Sheesh!

Alright mrkrispy I did it and I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that this mod doesn't work on micro jets. The good news is that a little modification to this mod will make it work. What I did was cut the nozzle off of the micro jet. Then I cut 1 of the bottom corners of the casing off also. This made the mod work. I also found out that this mod won't work on aquaclear powerheads. The reason this works on maxi-jets is the nozzle is what directs the spray. On the aquaclear the casing directs the spray. So no matter how much I cut it, it never worked.

I have a Hagen Aquaclear 802 which I cut the nozzle off plus the surrounding plastic away to leave a rectangular hole plus I cut out the water inlet to allow more water flow through the powerhead and it works a treat. I have no wavemaker on my tank but if you turn it off then on you can change direction of flow, saying that 802's aren't great on wavemakers I only wanted more flow and that I have by quite a lot

Is the impeller exposed? If so wouldn't that be potentially dangerous to fish etc. I must be missing something.

The impeller is not exposed. The impeller housing is still in place (it wouldn't work otherwise). The outlet "tube" is cut off. There is a little line on the impeller housing at the base of the tube, that's where I cut mine.

I just did this mod to my one of my mj1200s, works great, I cut it about as far up as I could get it and still make a clean cut and not have the impeller too exposed. I placed it on the upper corner and it damn near ripped a ric off. I tired it at the other end and my kenya and GSPs love it!!!

I have 2mj 1200s on the front and back right side pointing lenghwise of the tank on pump 1 & 2 on the wavemaster, and mod is on the mj900 (pump 3) on the upper right and the final mj 1200 is at the upper right point towrds the glass.

Mod failed

Mod failed

I made the modification and it did not work...
I also noticed the fitting of the nozzle housing is really tight (maybe that is the root cause of the melfunction?)

What do you guys think? HOw tight are your Maxijet fittings?

thx

It opened in windows media player for me. Just click on it and... wait for a while :)

Its a cute vid, but basically it just shows the pump working. He flips the swich and the first two of three trys it pumps to the left the last try it pumps to the right. If you follow the link on the first page of posts you will see the diagram, So, don't sweat it if you cant get the vid to work.

imagine how funny we look watching a guy holding a powerhead in the bathroom sink while it turns on and off...LOL

Great mod by the way, i will have to check it out.

wow!

can't believe this thread is still around.

i was skeptical at first but tried it. it works most awesomely i must say.

so go in fact that i have 5 in my tank all with cut spouts and on a reef fanatic wavemaker.

even if i get some tunze streams...my mj's will stay there.

i had just recently retired a 16 year old mj 600. not once did i service it or clean it. didnt know you were supposed to! ;)

also, because they are so cheap and have been around for a long time...it is no problems to replace if they should ever break while on the wavemaker(s) (i also have three mj 1200's in my fuge on a red sea wakemaker ;)).

Hey, I did this mod on my 3 new 1200's today and I am very impressed. I got them yesterday, and I was a little hesitant to cut up a brand new powerhead, but I'm glad I did. I took some pictures to document the process:

First, the maxijet in my tank.

The dispersion piece removed (just pulls off):

A picture showing where I cut and what I used.

I thought it was going to need some sanding, but I later rinsed it off and it didnt need any.

Mounted back in my tank... after I tested this one out I did it to the other two. The flow from this one switches from blowing slightly against the glass to halfway towards the other powerhead.

I'm bought this package from Drs. Foster and Smith, and after doing the mod I am VERY happy with the flow in my 75 gallon tank. I was planning on getting another one of these kits with a few 600's, but I really dont think it's nessecary after doing this mod. Even with the wavemaker, the flow is not truly random unless you do this mod. I am extremely pleased...dont expect it to spread out the flow much though, I will still need to move these things farther away from the rockwork when my frags grow out. I showed my dad and he freaked out: "WHY'D YOU BREAK THOSE NEW THINGS?!" Oh well, I'm the reefkeeper, I know best :) .One question though: how is this piece supposed to fit over the edge of the aquarium?

Not even close!
