Modifying Shrouds on 6101's

I've heard of others taking/cutting every other slit on the shrouds to increase flow by reducing restriction.

Can this harm the pump motor in anyway? Is there a negative side to doing this mod?

The downside is larger openings and this means it is more likely for fish to enter and large object to damage the propeller. I don't see much of a plus side, provided the intake is clean it should not impede flow, I don't think there is much gain of a modded intake vs one that is just kept clean.
