moisture barrier

I'm into the water closet (sump room). I'd like to protect the backside of my sheetrock/drywall from excessive moisture with something rather inexpensive yet effective. (This is the sheetrock between the display aquarium and the sump's closet).
Open to suggestions. A sheet of plastic would seem a cheap inexpensive solution... albeit a rather unattractive one!

Behind or in front of drywall. I would probably use Kerdi like we used in the shower. It goes over drywall.. but then something like tile goes on top.

you could use an inexpensive vinyl plank flooring, run it on a 45 or go crazy and do a herringbone pattern. You could just buy damaged boxes at a discount and do it like an accent wall you see in magazines with different color woods

all good suggestions

all good suggestions

I need to keep it simple yet effective. We all know how sump areas tend to be areas of higher humidity

I think I now understand what you are trying to do. The sump is behind the wall in the unfinished portion of your basement. You would like to protect the backside of the drywall (through the studs) that is facing the finished portion of the basement. Correct?

If so, I think you could use cheap vapor barrier material that is used under hardwood flooring for something like that. Fairly inexpensive at HD.

I would do purple or green drywall and paint with exterior paint.

I did that on my 360g, where the drywall was exposed to the sump and hood areas, and it was totally fine. Granted it was only up for 4 or 5ish years but even when subject to a pretty healthy salt creep and high humidity, the drywall was totally fine.

air flow fixes all . my sump room in the cellar is unfinished the backside of the drywall completely exposed . no issues here . but I have a small window fan going 24 / 7 /365 . ...

Green or purple board, it's all moisture resistant drywall. That and a good coat of high gloss paint for wipe ability.
