Mollies?

I've seen a few threads now of people using mollies in frag tanks for algae control..

What are the best kind, and what is the acclimation process to get them used to saltwater?

Some places will sell mollies already acclimated to saltwater. But if they dont, what i did was drip saltwater over 6 hours.

what kind of mollies?

do they have the terretorial issues like saltwater fish? How many could I put in a 30 gallon 36" frag tank?

Im not sure on how many you could put in. I havent noticed any territorial issues. I have 3 sailfin. 2 white and 1 black.

I've looked into it but my frag tank is too small.

Mollies are passive fish and won't bother other saltwater fish. They will also reproduce in your tank if you have a male and female so introducing two is all you need. They'll soon populate the tank.

I've thrown mollies into salt water tanks....yes thrown, no acclimation. Perhaps inhuman, I don't really care though. 3 out of 4 lived through it.

black mollies only, drip water in for 6-12 hours and they will do ok, if you are human and want to put them back to freshwater, reverse as the proceedure to salt

You my friend should have your right to keep animal taken away from you.

Then droped off on the top of Mt.Everest with no air tank, you P.O.S!!:mad2:

I've used all color mollies. Drip for 3 hours and your good. They will breed if water quality is good. 2 will become more like 100 in no time at all and the fry are great cleaners. A lfs will be happy to take fry already in saltwater or keep the fry and return the adults.

I have a pair of black mollies that I used to kick off the cycle on my new 125. I put clean, dry base rock in the tank then filled it up with RO/DI. I added the mollies, then over a week I slowly added salt until it hit full reef salinity. 4 months later everything is great and the mollies seem very happy.

I did have a small diatom bloom along teh way, and they did help control it. It was fun to look at the tiny "kiss" marks all over the glass.

You can use just about any molly. I have a good mix of saltwater mollies right now; orange, white sailfin, couple dominoes, and some freaky goldish/transparent one. I have lost two but they were beat up by the 2 big males, not from acclimation. experiences seem to be that the breeds with big dorsal fins (sailfin) tend to do better in full strength seawater, but my experience is that just about any will do fine if acclimated properly. Just about every mollie available now is a hybrid anyways, and from what i read they are all one spieces, just different breeds (like dogs) so it shouldnt matter. Just be carefull, once they start breeding you're gonna have a whole lot of babies within a very short time. good luck

Yea I'm not exactly sure why you would take the time to tell people how stupid you are.

Yeah I'm not exactly sure why I would take the time to acclimate some 40 cent mollies. Just thought I would mention that the fish are actually pretty freeking hardy. You all can bite me I guess. :)

Yea I can't imagine any other reason to treat your livestock well other than the fact that you spent money on it. You can bite yourself.

What about putting a few in a refugium? Or would that eat all the pods? The fry could get into dt for fish food. Just curious...
