Monkey's Reef - A photo journal [img heavy]

well, there will be water underneath there..i have not created a vacuum.. I agree, its probably not optimal, but I do not think it will be(come) an issue.

KK, thanks for that picture. It looks really great. The sand does look really natural I would have to say. :)
The only way someone could tell is if they were really keen and noticed that one or more large and obviously heavy rocks were kind of standing on small little points instead of pushing down into the soft sand.
Thanks again for the picture and great job. I really like that look. :)

Well, I moved over my 20g late last night -- I wanted the fishies to have the evening in the dark to calm down... these guys have had a very stressful past 6 months between multiple tank moves.

This morning everyone is still swimming.. my cleaner shrimp molted due to the stress, but he's still kicking.

I setup the fuge, so there's lr + chaeto down there. In a few days I'll re-aquascape the new rock, and then I can finally slow down!

Ill have new photos soon, stay tuned! :P

how much did it cost you to do that faux sand bed in total?

It looks awesome, im sure you can make it uneven too for an even MORE natural look.

I might go this route now.. hmmm
Great progress so far Btw Look forward to the new pics

the cutting boards were like $45 shipped, the epoxy was $25, and the sand.. I dont remember.. maybe another $30, but I purchased too much of that..

Small image update:

As said above, I moved over the 20g late last night.

This morning, everyone was out and exploring. My cleaner shrimp molted [due to stress] but was otherwise active. My torch opened more than it has in the past 2 months, so I think my tank was ready for it with open arms.

I have some images below (some linked, due to size). I have not finished the left-side aqua scaping, but last night i was most interested in just getting everyone in the tank, acclimating, and reducing stress.

This image is a composite image, as the right side of the tank is just so bright (because of the white rock), I couldnt possible expose both sides perfectly.

UPDATE FROM THE DEAD!

Hello all, I have some photos and updates for the interested.

It has been some time since I last updated, but not much has changed. Just normal growth as we'd expect ;)

Let's see.. first of all:

I automated my auto top off, which is good (RO runs into a bucket w/ float valve, bucket has PH in it w/ float switch in sump, so nothing is needed for perfect levelling!). The float switch was purchased from http://www.floatswitches.net/ and I also purchased their new holder. You heat this strip of plastic up, it then becomes plyable. Then you wrap it around your sump till it cools and hardens becoming the perfect mold (http://www.floatswitches.net/images/mold5A.jpg). The guys over at http://www.floatswitches.net/ were awesome and their products have so far been great.

After that I just let the tank sit. I added some more fish (Flame, and 4 chromis). That will probably be it for the tank. I seem to have plenty of swimming action going on, and I think the bioload is a fair amount.

3 weeks ago I added a gorgonian.. (http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/25-gorgonian.jpg 2-3 hours after acclimation). In two weeks, I had new growth from the guy (http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/28-gorg.jpg take a look at the base). With this realization, I decided that the tank was ready for some SPS.

1 week ago I added the first SPS and I am very excited! I purchased 1 orange monti. cap, 1 green w/ purple fringe monti. cap, 1 orange monti digita, and 1 blue tort (http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/27-acro-tort.jpg). I need to take a photo of the others, oops :P

Anyways, all is doing well. I will be doing a major cleaning tomorrow on the faux sand bed (which seems to require far more upkeep than a normal sand bed due to things settling, and algae growing on it). I probably should have saved my full tank shot until AFTER I cleaned up, but o well ;)

Here is the tank as of tonight:

Happy reefin'!

I've got dime sized pieces of corraline forming on it, too. It shouldnt be long before it's difficult to tell the two apart ;)

lookin nice, why did you place the monto so far down ? any reasons may be lighting ? I dont really remember your setup.

I've got a 250w DE HQI 10k Ushio at the top w/ a RO III reflector. The entire column sits directly below it. Also, I didnt want the caps to create giant shadows hiding corals under them, so I placed them low. We'll see how they deal.

Also, I have 2 48" VHO Uri actinics running across the tank and 2 24" 10k VHO's on the left side for the softies.

Well, I purchased a 10 frags for $150 package from www.reefermadness.us

FedEx dropped the ball and delayed the overnight shipment 1 day mid-transit. Ater an ADDITIONAL 24 hours had passed, the package finally arrived today at around noon est.

I quickly sprung into action. Below are photos of all the frags purchased.

I have begun a thread in the reefermadness subforum to directly interact with them further (past our phone conversations): http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=698590

I hope everything does well.

I am sad that FedEx was incapable of living up to their end of the deal. These forms of shipments are both very important, and very expensive. I can safely say, however, had FedEx not messed up, I would be EXTREMELY satisfied with the size and variety of the frags as well as the customer support and packaging of the corals by www.reefermadness.us .

Even with this experience, any future (similiar) purhcases I make will go through reefermadness.

wow, those frags are very nice, i just checked that RM website, i am in awe, and am contemplating an order in the future, since most of my livestock was wiped out from hurricane wilma,

Looking forward to an update

very nice

update:

Well, after the weakened frags arrived, my flame angel decided to increase his nipping. He began harassing all of them, more and more. I tried to feed him several times a day to calm him, but it didnt work -- he kept nipping. Finally, I used a 2 liter bottle (cut the front off, flipped it) with mysis. Within 30 minutes, he went in, and I pulled it up using fishing string. He was returned to the store in good condition. I will miss his beauty.

In place of the flame, I picked up a very special new member. So far he has been shy, but hungry and cute. His name his Hermes, and he is a sargassum trigger:

He has been a great new citizen, ignoring the shrimp (who live right next to his sleeping spot). I look forward to taking care of him.

As for the frags, color is slowly returning, and polyps are extending more and more each day. The combined stress of the shipping and the flame undoubtly hurt them, but I am seeing improvement on all fronts. Expect photos in the coming days.

Oh, before I forgot: I also purchased a lettuce nudibranch from Reefermadness with the hope it would work on a bryopsis problem I am battling. So far he is actually consuming small quantities! I am excited and look forward to our combined effort in ridding the tank of this annoyance.
