I got this little Setosa frag a while ago. It started looking like this a few months ago. I had cut the tip off that had this discoloration; however, fast forward a couple months and this is what I have. Have you ever seen this?
Yup. It's just encrusting over it's own dead skeleton. Very common for a Setosa that's been subjected to an alkalinity swing or something that has caused it to die back.
Same thing will happen with most encrusting Montis.
