Love them clownfish.
after inquiring with several people who have used or not used moonlights, and also had their prized clownfish jump from their tanks, id like to take out a poll on the issue. the idea is that moonlights will prevent clownfish from jumping from open top systems. in theory. and at least in my personal experience.

I lost a male B&W O while using moonlights with an open top. However, I don't think the moonlights had any effect on that at all. I am fairly certain that it was because the female clown had turned on him.

He jumped once and was able to get him back in. That night ( before I had cut my egg create ) he jumped again -- this time I wasn't there to save him.

In my other two tanks I have no moonlights, both with open tops, and never had any of my clowns jump (( 9 years and 2 years ))

I think the moonlight makes the fish less jumpy at noises in the dark, and also gives them a better idea of were they are in relation to the surface.

i agree with arati. in a pitch black tank, i would assume it would be difficult to know where the water stops and the air begins, especially when rapidly swimming away from some sort of startling stimulus.

so far, with my open top tanks, ive never had a clownfish jump. ive attributed this to my moonlights.

an example, i sold a tricinctus that id had for several months to a fish store, and within three days it had jumped out of their open top cubicle. i think a moonlight or some sort of ambiet room light in their fish room could have prevented that....

You are assuming all jumps are at night. I lost a clown (male of a spawning pair) to a jump during the daytime.
