Moorish Idols Feeding and Tank mates

I recently purchased a Moorish Idol and was quite excited to have it eat misos shrimp. What I am unsure of now is based on the reaction I have recieved in a previous question about having a Moorish. Are they as difficult and scary to keep as people are making out. Do they absolutely need to be a fed a sponge every month or so? Is there any other types of food he NEEDS to recieve?

The other issue I am having is that my angel is not happy about the new arrival and will randomly chase him around. Any suggestions to calming an angel down a bit? I will try about anything. Please absolutely any information would be greatly helpful.

I've had a Moorish idol for about 8 months and he's super healthy and happy eating flake, nori, and a variety of frozen foods. I don't believe it's necessary to feed these fish sponges, however hitchhiker sponges usually grow on live rock, which you Moorish idol should eat, so if you can acquire some of these types of sponges once in a while it may be a good idea, however it's probably not that important.

As for the flame angle, she probably just needs time to adjust, be sure your tank is big enough, my Moorish idol doubled in size in about 2 months after purchase.

from what i hear idols need a big tank to be happy, and live. one guy here on RC has had luck with them, and he was certain that a large tank was one of his reasons why they do do well for him... he said at least 180gallons, but the survival rate of MI in captivity is really low, and the big parts to keeping them was make sure they are eating at the LFS...if it wont eat, you can be sure it wont live..

after seeing tons of MI while diving in fiji, i really looked at getting one, but after doing reseach, i need a bigger tank first...

see if you cant do a search and find some more info on the MI...

the key to keeping is a big tank and make sur eyou pick one that is eating frozen or flake before you buy. They are a awesome fish but do need alot of room and if not eating forzen or flake will be hard to get off sponges same as the harlquin shrimp

I recently was able to pick up a pair of Moorish Idols and they are beautiful fish. This pair was originally hand collected in Hawaii and overnighted to a customer the the SF Bay Area that eventually ended up having to take them to the LFS. I happened to be in shortly after this and took them home to my 450 gal. reef tank. There was a little difficulty in getting them to eat but they are now very rowdy eaters. I fed live brine shrimp initially but now they pig out on frozen krill and mysis along with Formula 2, nori, flakes, diced shrimp, mussels (they love mussels!) and most anything else I feed them. I've given them a few of the small sponges that grow in the dark sump and overflows but in general they don't get sponge in their diet. They remain fat and healthy after 3 months (this is a short time but it is looking good so far). They haved ticked off the emperor angel who thought he was king until this pair of new fish showed up (one is about 6" in length and the other is slightly smaller at 5"). He periodically chases them around the tank before returning to sulk in his cave but they seem to effortlessly zoom away from him. To see the pair of them doing a synchronized parade back and forth in the tank is a magnificent sight. At times the sailfin tang likes to tag along and swim with them. None of the other fish seem to bother them other than the foxface likes to try and steal krill from them. Other tankmates are a flame angel, 2 lyretail anthias, a horde of tangs (4 yellows, blue, purple, the aforementioned sailfin), a school of bluegreen chromis, and a clownfish. There is a lot of SPS, mostly acros and limited LPS, although I have about 2 dozen ricordia florida. I have not seen the Idols going after any of the coral but I purposely feed the fish a lot so that they will be less tempted about going after the coral. The Idols pick on stuff on the live rock but they eat enough at feeding time so that I don't think they are very hungry most of the time.

One interesting note, within 18 hours of adding them to the tank they both showed significant crypt symptoms (20+ or so white spots). I didn't think I could catch them without harm and I couldn't treat traditional crypt/ick medication without taking out many of the inhabitants of the tank. I started adding Kent Garlic Extreme to their krill and mysis, soaking it for 20-30 minutes before feeding. Within a week the spots were gone and they have not come back. A number of other fish (all of the tangs) developed spots shortly after and they also recovered without any losses. I was surprised how "easy" this was. No other fish has shown white spots since (other than the blue tang which now seems to have a chronic problem with this and spots show up every week or two - but only for him).

I'd be very interested in hearing form other Moorish Idol keepers about their experiences including feeding strategies and issues to look out for.

Contact Paul B, he is a member of Reef Central and has Moorish Idols in his reef, he can give you alot of info on the fish.
Look for Paul B in the member list.

You need to be enriching his food with something---selcon, zoe, vitachem especially while he is only eating one foodstuff

Contact Paul B his reef is over 35 years old and he has had loads of experience both in the wild and in his tank. He really caters to his and based on the pictures he posts they thrive.

Hello there Andrew. While my present Idol is about 2 1/2 now that is still no indication that he will live ten or more years like he should. Like I said, their main food is sponge, I never saw them eat anything else in the sea. Although mine will eat anything including flakes and is really too fat' I have found through a lot of experience with these fish that that means nothing. They will drop dead for no apparent cause. I have been feeding mine local NY sponge that it really loves more than anything, he will practically jump out of the water for it. NY sponge looks like dirt and I am surprised anything will eat it. I collect it in the summer and freeze it as it will not even last a day in a heated tank. I mis judged how much sponge I would need for the winter and I ran out. Since I did, his fins have lost their tips and his beautiful dorsal shrank. He still looks very healthy but I assume their must be something in sponge that they need. I also have an automatic feeder that I fill with "Soft and Moist" pellets because Idols should be fed a few times a day. I taught him to eat from a dish which has a tube connected to it which extends above the water. The feeder puts pellets in the tube which goes into the dish. The Idol checks out the dish every minute or so. I do this because I just want the Idol to eat a few times a day, not the other fish. Also none of the food is lost.
Hopefully he will live through the rest of the winter until I can collect more sponge. It is very common here on piers right near the surface. It looks like those muchrooms that you find on rotten wood.
Besides the dish I always feed him from my tube feeder. I feed all my fish this way and would never just dump food in the tank.
He is biting at the feeder here for more sponge.

This is when he was small eating from the dish. Now the dish is covered with coraline algae.

Where did the pictures go? Here is the dish, the fish was young here

I had one for a short while, but he was eating my lobo, and a few echinopora, so he had to go. He didnt eat flake, but picked at PE mysis. I bought a few live Littleneck and manilla clams at the grocery store, and every day I would slightly crack one open, so it wasnt killed, but he could get at the flesh. He really liked to eat them.
I still have a few of those clams living in my tank. Leftover from 6 months ago when I returned him.

Try it, even if you dont crack them open, mine seemed to enjoy watching the clams, waiting for a time to strike. He never bothered my Maxima clams at all though which is nice, but weird.
