Moorish Idols

hi guys,

wanted to know some input about taking care of Moorish Idols, going in a 180. I saw one in LFS eating flakes and pelletes. Should they be in a school or one is better?

Two are defiantly better. I had mine in a 90 gallon, but they are such a timid fish I realized the 90 gal was to small. Your 180 should be fine for them.
Truly an amazing looking fish.

All of the original 4 had died. I bought two more smaller ones but then after about 4 months they were getting to big for my tank. I gave them to my boss who has a 180 they need a lot of room imo. When I get a bigger tank I would try them again.

They were eating mysis and flake then Bill "billsreef" had given me some sponges he collected locally and they loved it.

Chris "cb747" had a Hawaiian group buy about 6 months ago. With shipping it was about 30.00 each Idol.

Contact Mike Stern "Tobasdad" he can get you a good deal on them.

Dexter, I am sorry to say but I think your tank is not ready yet for a moorish Idol. It is not just food. I have had about a dozen of them and they all ate flakes. They eat just about anything but that does not mean you can keep them alive very long. They have a habit of dying for no apparent reason. I collect local NY sponge to feed mine but I suppliment it with banana, avacado, clam, mysis, live worms, nori and fish. I feed it three times a day and I also give it vitamin A and Selcon. So far he seems very well but I only have him three years which means nothing. I dove with them and have only seen them eat sponges in the sea. They also live in mated pairs so it would not be a good Idea to get two of them. They find their own mates and putting two together is not the same thing.
Good luck.

(hello there Chris)

I'm like "Red Slime" I find my way all over.
Today I will find myself on my boat, probably in a squall.
Take care.

Chris, good thing we didn't listen to the weather. It was one of the best party days out on the boats. We had four boats tied up with us, (or we tied up to them as they are much bigger) we stayed in the water because the water is about 70 degrees and on a short trip to a tide pool we got a dozen nice large blue claws.
I really can't see how anyone can live without a boat.
For the last thirty years, if it was not raining, we party out on boats.
Have a great whats left of the weekend.

We got my buddies boat back yesterday and went out for all of 30 minutes. Seems the gas tank sint venting so anytime we ran at full throttle the engine starved for gas and stalled out. It also seems to be running hot and the mechanic who dropped the whole lower unit didnt replace the water pump for some unknown reason so we may have to do that. Best part is his car died on the way back home and its not good when the tow truck driver is sitting next to you LOL I think im getting a trailer hitch for my van this week so we have a second vehicle to tow his boat with....... His car was making alot of noise and it sounds expensive to me! Poor guy has no luck.

Chris,

Pull the vent for the gas tank, sometimes you get wasps etc. nesting in it when the boat has been sitting for a bit. Also change out the water seperator/fuel filter if it hasn't been done recently, could be gunked up. BTW a mechanic that drops a lower unit and doesn't try and sell you a new water pump should be beat with a wrench ;)

Bill i agree with that. Why he didnt replace a $30.00 water pump is beside me? The guy is a great mechanic and he asked us about the WP when we dropped the motor off. He said he would check it out. I dunno.......
As for the vent we were going to tow the boat over to our employer and blow it out with an airline however his car decided differently. Its definitely clogged cause i had a hard time putting gas in the boat. The nozzle kept clicking off no matter how fast or slow i added the gas.
Irreguardless of the things that went wrong the motor ran like a top and is very strong. We just have a few colleteral things to deal with. I told him to call the mechanic and ask him why on earth he didnt replace the water pump and see what he will do about it....... The motor ran around 180ish and to me thats getting hot. Id be much happier around the 130 to 140 range.

I don't know boat motors, cars & trucks are more familiar to me, but 180 isn't too hot for what I'm experienced with.
Bill???
