Moorish Idols

Its warm for a marine motor. Ideally 130 to 140 is the normal operating range. For a car 180 is the normal range.
3 hours sleep last night + 42 vacation days = 1 vacation day for me today :)

Chris,

It might also be the thermostats or some old salt crystals gunking up the cooling passages. It's pretty easy to look at an impellar and tell if it's been recently replaced as opposed to last season's worn impellar, so if the guy is good it just might be OK. That said though, I would have made a new water pump impellar and housing part of the job price and just done it. Learned long ago not to let silly little things like muck up the job. Once worked for a guy that really drove that lesson home, he would stop me and tell me "the customer's not going to pay for that" every time I'd go to do one those little things, and guess what? Yup, came back and bit us in the backside every time  Got a few stories from that job :eek1:

I think im going to replace both thermostats. The guy was very religious on flushing the motor everytime he went out so he says anyway. The motor is so clean i dont doubt anything he said. The motor was sitting in his garage for a few years so im thinking the thermostats makes the most sense. Upon looking in the parts book there 143 degree thermostats so thats about where it should be running at :)

Well i went to pull the thermostats and lo and behold there are none. That alone could make the motor run hotter! Picking up new ones this week.
Paul you have an I/O setup on your boat correct?

Closed thermostat makes an engine run hotter. Missing/stuck open should do the opposite.

Not on an outboard. Outboards need the thermostats to govern pressure from the water pump. Without them the water doesnt circulate correctly resulting in a hotter running motor.
Outboards are in the own category. Take alot of what you and i know about car motors and toss it out the window!

I think I'll shut up until you start working on a car, or a truck.

LOL Logically thinking one would think it would work that way. Guess thats why marine mechanics charge $92.00 an hour.

Chris, I do have an I/O on this boat but my last boat was a 140 horse Evenrude outboard which I did two engine jobs on in 18 years. I had to replace the pistons twice. I could take one of those apart with my eyes closed.
There's not much to them.
My engine I have now is a 350 Volvo Penta made by Chevy. I also had to do an engine job on this one too. Now it runs like a dream (so far)

Ahhh very nice setup. :) Let me guess on the Evinrude both times you lost 1 cylinder? There notorious for that. Thats what happened to Kennys before he lost half the motor. The thing was a pig and abused when he bought it. It never ran right!

I'd be concerned about why the thermostats where missing. Most people put in new ones after pulling out the old ones. I'd guess that motor had an overheating problem that new thermostats didn't solve and someone got smart thinking leaving them out would solve the problem.

Maybe he yanked them when he stored the motor intending to put new ones back in when he used the motor again. The inside looks nice and clean from what i could see :) Id be very surprized if this motor ever overheated.

Chris I threw out the thermostats on the Evinrude and it always ran cool.
Once the piston head came off. It exploded right through the side of the engine pushing the starter off. I had a pliers and screwdriver and my wife asked if I could fix it so we could get back. It was a factory defect and Evinrude paid for half the parts because it was recalled but the original owner never returned it for service. The second time the connecting rod broke spewing roller bearings all through the powerhead. I managed to hone it down enough to save the head.

Ok theres a shortage on LI of Merc thermostats. Ended up trucking to Island Park to get them. Anyplace around here didnt have any in stock.
Paul ouchie Ive never been a fan of evinrudes. Ive always prefered merc. They tend to last longer. Evinrudes are notorious (atleast the older ones) for losing a cylinder.
Ive decided i like spending my friends money LOL

Ok thermostats are in and it ran nice and cool on the hose ofcoarse everything runs fine till you put it in the water :) Just gotta blow out the vent line and we should be golden! Going out Saturday afternoon into the evening and all day Sunday. Bluefish tournament and first prize is 25 grand :) Anyone local to me want some bluefish if i do well? I dont eat them. Too fishy for my likes :)
