Most expensive Zoa/paly you have seen?

The best place for good prices is your local reef club which probably has a forum on here, after that you've got frag swaps, the vendor forums here, etc...

I agree the best pplace is there but yet theyre still not that easy to come by and yet alone that price thanks though!

I'm still very disgusted by the subject!!

But when it comes to the reality of it...
Unfortunately I think it's becoming more normal every day to see the market doing it's sick turns like that!! It's now normal already!!! It's sad and real!

One polyp deal?!?! Seriously?!?!? But that is so normal today, and people thinking like me turned out to be too old!! LOL!!!

But what keeps them doing it are the buyers.

I'm sorry, but making profit shouldn't be the first priority when keeping zoas as hobbyists. The "investment thing" takes away all the fun and makes you a dealer in and out!! Even your tank has shelves!! That's not what a display should look like for many of us. Some people need to decide if they are hobbyists or dealers. That's fine to me if they want to do that or to be what they want to be, but I'm just posting this to make sure people realize how bad things are getting.

Well, we can see the whole system is ridiculous!!!

We've got to face it: it's probably just going to get worse and more normal...

Reef clubs are great and probably the best way to go for many of us.

It's probably not worthy to even come here to talk about it anymore...
Let them make money.

And I'm not THAT old!!!
LOL!!!

Exactly, at some point there'll probably be an "us vs them" brainwashing forum where scamming people is so common that vendors hype their corals by posting cartoons personally attacking anyone who disagrees with the cult mentality, and everyone laughs forgetting that the joke's on them. Oh wait... it's already happened.... and you're not that old :D

They sure are, plus it saves like a ton of money on shipping!

Ive been going through this whole expensive zoa thing.....Ive just been trying to get a single polyp of blue agave and peoples prices are nuts for them and then are asking 50+ for shipping is in insane bc ive been shipping stuff for a long time and can ship for prob half that to most of the US.

I just had to laugh because of the pictures. Crazy guys!!!
I kinda liked the way they did and the fact that I am one of the "rivals", as they posted. I would never imagine to be the center of attention in any way, so...
Good to be known as one of them!!!
Makes my point stronger.

What would you do?
Fight? LOL!!

Let them make money, as everyone here let them.
I tell them the truth but most ignore us anyway.
Not worthy to be upset, my friend. That's not the way it works.
:D

I am a zoa and paly lover all the way and in the past I paid 35 dollars for a single polyp no that I would do now days since Im not that new in the hobby.
I would pay 100 for a single polyp as long as the skirt is in gold and the polyp is the size of a golf ball.:D
I respect if people want to spend whatever crazy amount on a polyp or frag I guess is not coming out of my pocket but thats just not right.
Im glad that the market here in Canada is not as nuts as the USA market for instants, we have some nice stores here in Toronto that sells very nice pieces for a decent price, most colonies with whatever number of polyps goes from 40 to 60 bucks.
Another way to get nice pieces that you dont have is to trade with other fellow reefers and everyone is happy;)

I like what Grandis says.....decide if you are a dealer or a hobbyiest :D

Wish I could meet for sellers just trying to help out fellow hobbyiest instead of trying to screw you and charge you insane prices per polyp..

I personally dont think any polyp is worth more then 30$...not saying I wont get forced to buy something I want for a higher price :/

IMO you know someone is in it for money, when their "mother colony", never gets over a dozen or so polyps... I know a few folks like that, then they always preach they are jus hobbyists... Ridiculous, lol...

Generally, I like don't like to buy zoas for more than $30, but I splurged and got some $70 polyps recently. I almost bought a red devil people eater for $175, but someone else bought it (thank goodness). I think the most expensive ones I bought were Blue eyed blondes.

Anyway, zoas have always been controlled by 2 things, looks and growth rates. In general, the more colors and the slower the growth means higher prices. The reason polyps are so expensive and still sell is because there are small amounts out on the market and people want them. Unfortunately, you can usually sell 2-3 of the polyps at a steep price cut and the coral pays for itself (if it doesn't melt) so people pay the money.

There is absolutely no reason you should pay $300 for a polyp, but people do to get what is new and colorful. As for me, I'll sit back and wait until I can buy these for lower prices.

If that were the case, then your beb's wouldn't have been called Fiji orange eagle eyes (2002ish, $10-20 for 10-20 polyps), then oxides (2006, $20 for 4-5 polyps), then beb's (2011ish, $50-80+ per polyp). The reason a lot of polyps are so expensive and still sell is because too many hobbyists are confused that new name = new coral, prime examples of which are beb's and dragonball z's (eclipse yellows, 2006).

Zoas in the past were maybe controlled by looks and growth rate, today they're controlled by two things: picture quality, and creative marketing.

I mean, here's a good example. I bought these as beb's at a coral show last year, they're legit lineaged and were pretty cheap since it was the end of the show. My tank got nuked by dinos for like 6 months and I lost a lot of my stuff, most everything browned out or died. Now they're slowly coloring up again under my LED's with rainbow colors, and the mouths on some of them are white and others now have tiny orange slits, you can see both kinds in the pic. Regardless of what I got them as or paid for them, I could now call them something else and charge a ton of money with the right picture, and then watch everyone fight about how different they are than beb's to protect their "investment".

Yep, that's it!!!
Good example, organism!!!!

Picture quality, creative marketing, cartoon names and "new zoas" that many had big colonies 10 years + ago!!! Now sold by a polyp or two. Shame!!

What I really wish was that all the newbies could try to listen to the so called "old school" people.

I don't think our point is hard to understand. I do believe that the new generation of hobbyists actually enjoy the cartoon named game and to actually pay for it!!
That's why it's not even worthy to get upset with the guys who are making the money.
I'm not upset with the newbies either, because I respect what they wanna do with their money and how they wanna enjoy their "trip".
The situation makes me sad and disgusted though.
I feel sorry for the people that have to buy zoas to enjoy the hobby.

How come I never see any of these nice big zoa rocks come into stores or anything? I mean they come in but they are not anything nice at all. At least what I see around here.
