im posting this to share with others my #1 resource when i have a question regarding my btas.

I appreciate the conficence in my site.
I rescued a huge 12+inch bleached bta yesterday from a local SW store.
It ate a silverside while in the bucket accliming so it will do well.
I have started taking pictures of it allready, (of course) to put on my site.
He had beautiful bubble tips and was firmly attached at the store but when I asked them what they were feeding them they said mysis.
I told them what they needed to survive and the (girl) says, the owner of the store won't let us feed them those because they are to expensive.
You should have seen the green one they had. I swear it was flourscent.
Huge bubbletips, attached but bleaching also.
79.00 was a bit high for me however so I had to leave it there.
If it is there next week I may rescue it but they have 3 more that are very nice but bleaching out fast.
If anyone is in or near Tyler Tx go by and take a look. They are at Petland
If you have the tank and time to take care of them to save them go and pick one up.
I am so far up to 12 bta's and am building up my stock once again (for my own viewing pleasure)and will be setting up a 125 bta only tank in the near future I hope.

Unfortunately buying and saving all those BTA will just convince petland that they need to order more next time since they were able to sell the last order so well. "Saving" a few animals usually just puts more animals at risk. Good luck.

Dan, I have bought and SAVED 2 from them.
Are you saying I am the reason they keep ordering them?
Your statement above is very outrageous and if you feel that way then you should not now or in the future purchase a single SW animal ,invert or snail for your tank, as when you purchase it they will replace it with same.

That's exactly what I am saying. By giving someone money in exchange for poorly treating an animal you are encouraging this behavior.

I won't buy livestock from a shop that does not take care of their animals because I would rather see that company go out of business. This also goes for buying animals that I suspect are collected using cyanide. Same reason I would never consider buying a dog that came from puppy mill as you are only feeding the industry.

As for your assertion that this is outrageous because any animal you bu is replaced. You are absolutely right. If I buy an animal from a dealer who buys from reputable sources and treats the animals well then that dealer will then bring in more humanely captured/aquaculted animals and sell them making more money. This then encourages good business practices. I have no problem with this outcome and I don't feel it is outrageous.

Should you in the future see an animal that is dying and in need of help or saving be sure to pass it up ok? So that that person won't think about replacing it with another.
When I feel that I am helping an animal under stress as I have done with not only fish but dogs, cats birds chickens etc I take them in and give them a home I find it to be a good thing not bad.
I don't give it a second thought as to wether the previous owner or pet shop manager is ignorant and orders another of the same thing. I can not stop that.
Saving an animal in my eyes from death is a good thing , to you it appears to be appalling and not a good thing. I feel sorry for you that you feel this way, and also

It was not intened to be an arguement about saving any SW animal.

I will continue to have a soft heart for any dying animal I find and I hope others do not see things the way that you do as there will be many animals in this world that would not live long.

Finding Nemo I'm in the same position as you, I got to the LFS and see small bleached BTAs, some are really nice, you can tell some are purple or oranged tip they just need TLC. I rescued one and its hiding somewhere in the rockwork. So once I get my 90gal and everything moved from there I am going back to get some more. They actually get the BTAs in a bit healthy, but they don't have strong enough lighting on them nor do they feed them so they aren't doing to well.

And it feels great when you see that animal turn around and go from dying to thriving, and knowing you saved it. Basically its like my dogs. I would never be able to see a mistreated dog, and I have the same feeling for most animals too. And if I can take them in I do.

you assume you know the treatment of the entire process from which the animals you buy are handled, cared for before they reach your acquarium. just bec your lfs takes care of the animal it does not mean it was caught in a proper manner.

unless the lfs can trace and give you exact tracking info of your animal from capture to the lfs, you are making an "big" assumption. so before you accuse others of promoting bad practices do your research.

if they are not MAC certified than you have no clue.

Nemo and others keep doing what you are doing; everybody on this site has an opinion. I would not let anyone keep me from trying to help a distressed animal if I had the means and the tank space.

I have yet to see if it split at the mouths as it has/had two when I brought it home.

To throw my two cents in on the matter...

This young lady's site provided the information I needed to save a rbta from certian death. Everything that was suggested for care on the site was done and the turn around in the health of my specimen was nothing short of fantastic.

too late, you started it off with a personal attack toward someone that simply was trying to help and share with others her knowledge of an animal we all like.

How did I do that? I merely stated what model of behavior that most contienteous reefers have been advocating for years.

If these are not personal attacks can you please explain how they should be interpreted? There are no, less offensive, ways in which I can find to interpret them.

I think saving any corals is worth it...that's part of the fun in this hobby.

Karen, your site is wonderful. It has taught me so much about RBTA's and general anemone care. I find myself checking it several times a week. I think it is wonderful how you are saving them. And also your educating that sales lady, that is also wonderful.

I can't wait until i get my tank all set up and running and mature so that i can get a rose and follow all of your advice.

RBTA. I know it is hard to not pass them up and at times the manager knows that they are in bad shape and if you tell them that you know also they sometimes will come down on there price.
Go in with knowledge of bleaching and tell them what is happening to there anemones and make them an offer on one or several.
I have done that several times over the years and as long as you make it known that you know they are sick and not just a beautiful white color with bubbles the manger will listen.
Try to educate them if you can about feeding them.
Most Pet shops I have been in sell there anemones as fast as they get them in but in this case they don't as living in small town TX there are not a lot of SW people here so they sit in the tanks for weeks.
The one I bought the other day had been there for 2 weeks already the sales lady said.
So go and talk to the owner and make him an offer . You may just be surprised.
They can be saved with TLC.

And I agree with Dantodd. Not supporting a retailer that either mistreats their animals or buys inappropriate animals (either captured using chemicals or species that have miserable survivability in captivity) is a respected and encouraged methodology for effecting change within the hobby. No one should be offended when it is mentioned and/or discussed.
