Hey guys,
I was born and rasied in Des Moines, However Ive lived in Hudson, FL for the past 8 years. I got into reef keeping down here and im planning on moving back to iowa come march. Im hoping I can keep my hobby alive :( How is it trying to keep a tank up there? Im worried most of my livestock will have to be ordered online, Is there a good amount of stores there?

You cant swing a dead cat in this town without hitting a good fish store. Prices in my area are also pretty cheap being that its so popular.

Looking for any input, Thanks guys!!

Hey great to have ya back! Where in DSM are ya movin? There are 2 good local stores 3 shitty ones. 5-6 home growers(me!) 3-4 stores within a few hours drive. You will find a lot local. What are you used to keeping? Keep in touch and visit the main Ia reef site listed below. It dosnt cost to use the forums or to attend meetings but helps the club overall Thanks and have a good move!

Welcome back to Iowa.

We have a strong club with alot of activity in the DM region.

Coming from Fla, you will be dissappointed by the LFS we have to offer. there are a couple decent ones, but nothing to compare with what you have.

Act of God took my Blue Jaw as well! :-( He grew to about a foot or larger and then vanished in my rock work one day! I think it was the stresses involved w/male patterned baldness...

Yes, a very strong club in Iowa with lots of trading potential. I am also willing to help hold things of any nature. 500+ Gallons of space with about half full now. Please think about joining GIRS, we are planning another great Spring frag swap. A few weeks ago we had about 15 national vendors with Anthony Calfo and Randy Reed as speakers. Not bad for Iowa huh?

XRoads is right, LFS's are nothing compared to FL, but we do have a close association with one in Des Moines - Iowa Pet Food and Seacsapes. They support the club and will special order whatever you want at some sort of discount for club members. We usually have two salt buys a year, through them, at about $45 for a 200 gallon box of RC.

Welcome back to Iowa!

Never fear for there are Reefers here!

Thanks guys! It makes me feel better about the move knowing I can keep my hobby. I do order most of my dry goods online. Where I live in FL is kinda out in the middle of nowhere. I do have to drive about an hour and a half to get to the decent fish stores but there all located within a few miles of eachother including the ORA facility!!!

In Des Moines, you'll be within 7 or 8 hours of the Live Aquaria facility in Rhinelander, WI. We've talked about planning a club trip up there, but have not done it yet.

Welcome back to the state! We look forward to seeing you get engaged with the club. BTW, if you want to know more about the club, go over to www.iowareefs.com. That's where the majority of the club activity occurs including event announcements (and the forums are much more active over there too). Also, there will be a Spring Swap coming up in Des Moines in the spring. Hopefully you will be in Iowa and have your tank set up in time for that.
