Moving to los angeles.. a few questions.

Im relocating to west hollywood in a few weeks. I will be shopping around for a used 120 gallon tank stand and canopy.

Im driving from the east coast, and have the option of stopping by glasscages on the way to pick up an acrylic tank.

I know the area is prone to quakes and shakes. Anyone have glass tanks that survive the ground moving? Should i be worried enough to spend all the extra cash on an acrylic tank?

Anyone have a 120 rig they want to get rid of? Any good stores in west la?

I grew up in Midlothian back when it was the sticks. I guess it's just a big suburb, now! So Cal is much better -- no humidity! no tornados! no hurricanes!

I have a complete acrylic 100g setup for sale. If you want the whole thing (with or without rock/sand), we can work something out. It's up and running now and can continue to do so for a few weeks if needed, although I am in OC which is a bit of a drive for LA.

The system is already earthquake optimized, except for a few minor things I never got around to doing. I did already sell the skimmer and chiller, so you'd need to find those separate if you thought it was a good option for you.

Don't be raggin' on LA/WeHo. You'll love it!

There are a number of good new stores in West LA, unfortunately a bit of a drive from West Hollywood, but not terribly far. Don't know of any closer to you.
Reef Hot Spot on Pontius and Mississippi (right next to I405)
Medusa on Pico just east of Bundy
Aquarium Santa Monica on Santa Monica near Federal
 
I'd like to welcome you to SoCal ahead of time! So welcome!

One of the things you won't have to worry about when living here is access to aquaria related stuff. There's a buttload of LFS's!

As for the earth quakes, I think people who have never lived in Cali automatically stereotype the state as kinda like a hurricane/tornado ally and think it happens on a normal basis. At least ones that are strong enough to feel. I wouldn't worry about it too much (knock on wood) but it's always good to prepare for it.
 
I wouldn't think twice about getting glass tank, people from out of state who don’t live in a earthquake area think too much of it. If a quake is strong enough to break a tank then you probably have more to worry about. Take you time and you will find sweet deals on all size tanks. People are always getting in and out of the hobby so it’s just a matter of time. Don’t bother with glass cage; I hear their tanks aren’t the best in quality. If you want a generic tank then a 150 would only run you about $250-300 new for something like aga or viso. My friend just got a few Viso 180 with holes drilled for $320 new from Atlantis Aquarium.

hahaha when i worked construction we did a job in weho and the "ladies" were out in full force. of course this job was at 3 in the morning tho...
 
are you going to work at a sushi joint in LA? if so, mind sharing where? i am always on the hunt for good sashimi and nigiri.

And I had heard, honestly, that GC actually had some decent stuff. Am I missing something?

Visio I was never too impressed with, and AGA seems to have decent tanks. But IIRC they tended to be on the high side (almost as high as Lee Mar!).

I'm always on SOMEBODIES bad side... Kinda used to it.

Sorry, but I happened to know where they were because I had looked at them recently. Also, I might note, they have an expanded listing of tank sizes and prices on their site (http://tinyurl.com/rjht9) and they are also delivering into the LA area now (woo-hoo!).

So does anyone have any input on these guys, or?...

I thought there was a thread on it, but I don't recall (and speaking of threads, seems like this one has been hijacked...).

West Hollywood has a lot of great restaurants nearby, good shopping, and well for lack of a better way to put it "interesting" night life.

What it does NOT have are good fish stores. And the traffic between WeHo and the westside SUCKS
