Moving to los angeles.. a few questions.

LOL, guys, "eric" could be short for Erica. Or maybe Eric is moving to WeHo because of the neighborhood! ;)

I always have liked WeHo. A nice, clean, safe place to live (for urban LA), and a single girl can't do much better than a gay man for a roommate!

Yeah, but you have to worry about them "borrowing" your makeup. My gf's room mate had that problem with her brother using up her $40 MAC lipstick. hahaha.

Hmmm.

Borrowed makeup vs. a creepy guy that decides he likes you and won't take no for an answer...

... or a chick roommate that also borrows your lipstick and can't reach the top shelf either.

I loved living in WeHo in the 70's. Plus I had free makeover and shopping advice all the time :)

You could dance all night and never worry about where they were gonna put their hands

Easy for you girls to say. I feel so objectified walking through WeHo. Why can't hot girls look at me like that. haha But, yes it is very clean and neat.

hope he didn't have any sores on his lip. hahahahaha!

I wouldn't worry about earthquakes...we get small ones all the time but you can't feel them. If there ever was a really big one (knock on my stand).. I mean really big.. glass or acrylic..you're screwed either way..acryic might give you a little extra insurance.
Also, If anyone in Weho want to trade Mac lipstick for frags... I know someone who works at MAC's corporate office....all the lipstick you want!

It's really easy.. just start screaming or breakdancing while screaming in front of them..... they'll look at you for sure!

Thanks for the all the comments. I will scratch the idea of grabbing an acrylic tank from glasscages on the way out west.

My girlfriend is in west la right now going to job interviews at various graphic design firms. Most of which are in or near west hollywood. I dont care where i go. Just sick and tired of richmond.

As far as jobs for me goes, i have a few interviews lined up, buy the only place i know anything about is called blowfish.

Glad to see there is a lfs every 8 feet. Livestock is much cheaper than on the east coast as well. I guess most everything comes in through lax.

urasawa, echigo, mako, kiriko, sasabune, nozawa, R32 are some of the top ones on the westside (well most are on the westside, lol)

Blowfish is awesome!!
If you're not gay or a single chick I wouldnt move to west hollywood. There are a lot of cool places in the area to move. Someone on this thread said there are a buttload of LFS stores in weho...the only thing there is a buttload of there is well....ahhh, NM. Cumulatively in socal there are many GREAT LFS, but mostly pretty spread out, IMO.

And if an earthquake shatters your tank, think of it as the quick death vs. slow death...most likely there would be no house or apt left and certainly not electricity for long enough to kill everything in the tank anyway.

Everyeon always trots out that line about "bigger things to worry about," but it's not necessarily true. The "Medium One" (Northridge) shattered glass tanks (or more likely, they slid off the stand) while most acrylic tanks were left standing.

In a big quake -- Eric, those are VERY rare -- yeah, almost all the tanks are going down. Tank survivability aside, the LAST thing you want is shattered glass on the floor in the dark. Especially if you have kids or pets or you need to pack up and evacuate in a hurry.

Eric, get the official California earthquake preparedness kit, prep your house, make appropriate emergency kits for home, car and office, have a plan for you, family and pets, and then forget about it except for an annual inspection and review. Quakes worth noticing hardly ever happen and there's no point stressing over it. Just be prepared.

WeHo is pretty expensive. West LA is cheaper but not as nice overall. There are some very nice parts of West LA, though, and reasonably priced housing is still available if you look hard enough. Many small 4-6 unit post-war buildings are family owned, the mortgage long since paid off and manager is a family member in unit 1, so rent is reasonable and they tend to be better kept up. You won't see then advertised, though, you just have to drive around and look for the signs.

other consideration schools. If you're serious enough to move in with the girlie than well....you gotta think about the future.

WeHo schools suck. If you are thinking about children anytime in the near future, the majority of the west la elementary schools (third street, hancock park, overland, westwood charter, fairburn, and one other which is escaping me) are decent. Junior High and up you are sort of SOL though.

Beverly Hills school system is excellent for a public system and if you hunt around there is some not insanely priced rental units as well in south BH.

West Hollywood is pricey as a generality, but like west la if you hunt around there are things not so bad. Look in the areas around Carthay Circle, but stay away from the freeway and don't go too far east either. I used to live near "The Grove" and the prices around there have sky rocketed, but the rental prices have lagged vs the buy/sell market.

The girl and i have been living together, so no worries there. Both of us are big on the idea of never being divorced, so we are just waiting a year or two more to make sure we really are the right fit. People change. We want to making sure we change together over the years before we invest in rings and the tax write off.

Kids may come five years down the line. Both of us are only 27, so there is no rush. Our plan is to rent on the west coast for a few years, then come back east to buy a house, most likely in philly.

Now that ive explained my life story, on to something productive.

I just got the word from her that she has two jobs she can take, both can start at the end of august, so we have until then to get an apartment. She scoped out some places, but didnt sign a lease as we now have time to find something cheaper.

Does anyone know of nice buildings in west la that have one bedroom apts available? The closer to the ocean the better. We are looking for a low crime area. I dont live in the ghetto now, and i dont plan on going back with a girl to worry about. It needs to be atleast 600 square feet, and be priced at 1200 or less a month.

First of all if you move to CA, earthquakes are the LEAST of your worries. Trust me I grew up in LA and earthquakes aren't gonna kill you--- Gangbangers, House Prices, Freeway Traffic and Gas prices WILL.

O yea..... fyi: SUV's in CA are sold without turn signals

There's this freeway called "405". If for some reason you decide to drive there, don't forget to bring a book or a portable tv :D

West hollywood.... LOL. I wouldn't go out of the house after 9PM, unless you like "draining your tank" :D LOL

Ah, you want to look in Santa Monica, my friend. Prime territory is north of Wilshire Blvd. I live in Brentwood, which is just east of Santa Monica, and it's great, but not particularly close to the beach. Venice near the ocean is also really nice. I'll PM you my apartment-searching list, which I have used with much success to find apartments in the past.
