Moving to Pittsburgh. Have questions!

I've spent about 5 years of my life living in the South Side and currently own a business there. It's OK, he is right about too many bars/drunks and lowlifes...I threw that one in. But, it is really easy to get places without a car living in the South Side. Although, like the others I would not want to live without a car in the PGH area. Shady Side is nice though. If you are looking for a nightlife scene, I would suggest the South Side. Welcome to the city.

South Side is looking like a good option. However, is it within easy walking distance from Duquesne? My girlfriend got accepted there and is adamant about being within walking distance (safe walking mind you) haha.

Thanks for all the help!

South Side is probably your best bet for possibly walking to school. I think the 10th street bridge has a sidewalk but if I'm not mistaken from there you have to climb stairs up the side of the hill.

You can check it out on google street view. Right before the road goes into the tunnel at the end of the bridge there are stairs on the right. It looks like a hell of a climb. Also from the South Side or Duquesne I'm not sure how accessible the fish stores are without a car but the south side isn't really a bad area just a lot of college age kids looking to party. I think there is a lot of good culture there also.

Mount Washington is good but last I checked was expensive in spots. Also going to want a car here. Mt. Oliver is east of Mt. washington and is probably not the best area but not the worst either.

These are the places I have the most experience with out of all the places you mentioned. Hope it helped somewhat and welcome to Pittsburgh.

P.S. safe walking means most will tell you to avoid the hill district.

Xavier, don't forget the little people. And don't get into the Steelers, whatever you do.

Good luck man, we gotta chill before you go.

Some of the high turnover apartments in the Southside can be dives, take care in choosing! I've lived in Regent Square, Shadyside, Oakland, Squirrel Hill... Sq.Hill seems to be the safest at night, least crime reports. You would need a car for any of those neighborhoods but they all have access to Rt. 376, which would get you directly to Duq.

Nightlife considerations: Across the river from Duq you have Station Square with a few bars/clubs/restaurants, not always well populated. From there you can stay on Carson street and drive toward the South Side where you'll find about 12 straight blocks of bars, cafes, pizza shops, etc. The College crowd abounds. If you or one of your friends are still sober at this point you can head across the Birmingham Bridge toward Oakland for some half-price Mexican or Indian food after 10pm. Drive down Fifth Ave toward Shadyside for a nice small-bar scene with a couple clubs peppered in on Walnut or Ellsworth st. For some grimy dancing you could head to the Strip District, follow it up with a Primanti's capicola and cheese sandwich on 17th St. or chicken on a stick on 19th. Good luck gettin home!

Welcome to the burgh :-)

Sorry "thebanker"- if he is here for more than a year- he will be part of the "Steelers nation". At least if he wants to "fit in" . He He ....

Now we don't want to scare the poor lad! It's more fun to figure out the mystery meat you're eating and if it's actually cooked. Ever have the mung-bean pancakes from the guy around 18th? One of the more unique street foods, pretty tasty.

Wow,

Wow! San Clemente to Pittsburgh! You are in for some climate AND culture shock! I have family in San Clemente and would move there in a heart beat if it weren't for the earthquake and wild fire threats. Beautiful town. Great vibe. Pretty much utopian weather.

Anyway, Xavier... ignore all of the comments about Duquesne the neighborhood. It is nowhere near Duquesne the school. The walk to Duquesne from the South Side is quite a hike, especially in the winter, but there is a stairway from the end of the 10th street bridge up onto the Duquesne campus. If you really are set on being able to walk, I would look for places in an arc starting nearby to the south end of the 10th street bridge. If you like dive bars and the accompanying crowd of rowdies, you will LOVE the south side.

Anywhere other than Southside or a city high-rise, walking will be out of the question, but busses are decent and students can get discounted passes. If you still want to be somewhat close, Shadyside ,Squirrel Hill and Regent Square are all good choices (in that order, IMO). All are relatively safe, have shopping, restaurants, etc. nearby and are a reasonable bus ride to Duquesne.

Good luck with your move, and come see us when you get settled!

Adam

Like those that have stated before me, Shadyside is where everyone wants to be. If you are on the cheap then a bus could easily get you anywhere.

I've been in Pitt for 4 months now and stay in Shady Side and here is a brief overview:

Let's start with the cons:

Driving sucks - it takes 20-30 minutes to get anywhere because there really is no highway. So you're stuck driving stop light to stop light everywhere. If you're in Burgh you'll be driving 20-30mph anywhere you go.

Parking sucks - after you spend 20-30 minutes driving you'll spend another 5-10 minutes looking for parking

Weather sucks - I like the snow but now I'm just confused. 1 day it snowed, then 1 week we had warm weather, then hail, and now cold again. I thought the weather was warming up?

Pros:

Great people - The people in the Burgh are great and straight up. What you see is what you get. I grew up in Cali and you don't feel like you have to keep up with the Jone's here or fake personalities.

Great architecture - Some of the homes, churches, and building are breathe taking.

Great sports fanbase - You better be a Steeler's fan or quickly become one! This town loves their sports teams (Steeler's, Pen's, Panther's, and Pirate's (so-so on the last one))

You'll never drink alone in the Burgh - There are more bars here that any other city I've been to. There has to be at least 20 bars to every square mile.

If you're looking for a nice place to stay in the city then I would suggest Shady Side or Squirrel Hill but both will be a little pricey compared to other parts of town.

March is a crazy weather month.

It could be 80 or 20 degrees.

The sun could shine, it could rain or snow all in the same day.

Avg temp right now should be 56 so we have been pretty cold for the last week.
