Mp40's and Sps

How far from your vortech pumps are your sps? I have Acropora and they are like 10 inches from the mp40 direct line of sight is this too much flow for sps or too close ? I keep them dialed in around a third power either on ReefCrest or lagoon try to keep it off the blue or green too much too consistant as far as flow goes . my tank is a 4x2x2 120 gallon tank with 3 mp 40's two opposing off the top and one on the right side mid tank ....any intel is appreciated..

One of those "it depends" answers. Depends on the coral, I have put some within a couple inches of an mp40 running lagoon about 80% of max power. Some grew like crazy once they adjusted; others at least 10" away looked they were going to have their polyps ripped of amend as such kept them retracted vast majority of the time.
Being closer is also where I noticed a lot more encrusting and thicker/denser branches compared to mid-tank where branches were much thinner and sprouting in every direction.

I have one millepora about 6 inches in front but just a little lower than my mp40, and it loves it. then I have another one about 18", but directly in front of the pump, and the flesh is receding off the branch there.

I put an awi in front of a mp10 (10 inches) and skin was being blown off. A Convexa is a little off but getting blasted 3 inches from the pump and loves it. Depends on the coral

wow thanks for the tips this coral is a lokani type and the other a mille will try testing different location if the polyps don't look happy

I have 2 MP40s and 1 MP60 in my 30x30x24... sometimes i run all 3 at 100%. Yes its chaotic... Yes the polyps look like they are really stretching... but I know the sps all love it. Ive never seen polyp extension as I do now... some polyps extend as much as 1/2 inch. I do have corals closer than 10 inches in front of the MP60... I have a GIG that likes the direct flow as well.

I would like to resurrect this thread for a second, what was the general concensus on too close to an Mp40 for SPS coral? (acros)

Coral in question, ORA Joe the Coral Acro frag about 12" from Mp40, direct line of sight.

I have 2 40's on my 100g running at about 3/4 power. So not an issue with my acros. I think you (or more specifically, Joe) will be fine.

The consensus was it depends. I too have a 120 (4x2x3) with 2 MP 40s. At this time no corals are in direct flow. It's generally common practice to avoid continuous exposure to direct high concentrated flow.
The MP 40's by design have that broad distributed flow, which decreases the probability of damaging SPS in direct flow. Personally I would avoid placing any coral closer than 10-12 inches in direct line of sight at a flow that was higher than 50% or on a pulse mode over 70%. There are some SPS that could tolerate this but why take the chance and besides you will then eventually block the flow to the rest of the corals. These are just my opinions so if you disagree with my points that is fine too:)

Oh No i totally understand! I run my mp40 on ..Yellow mode? Reef Crest of Lagoonal, I think it toggles between the two. So it is not constant, I would say its dialed up to about 75% and then of course has a random flow rate.

I have 2 MP40's on a 90 gallon bowfront, and am currently needing to move a smooth skinned colony. a 2 inch area has completely died off from the flow. The reason that I have waited is because I only have so much room at this point, so moving it, means moving something else too.

I think it all depends on what type of sps it is , and just seeing if it adjusts or not.
