here you go, trying out some dry, but I'm always running wet,
steve on the other hand does one week dry and one week wet
on my skimmer mr-2, when running wet, a bit less air, to keep a nice constant micro bubble size, and very high water level, for drier a bit more air and lower water level
and like this I run my MR-2 on my BB setup, wet
mrc units will make your dreams come true
now I sound like "pedro"...

Hey everyone,
Well, I stopped piddling around and finally got the cycle started.
I tell you, it's a little nerve wracking when you fill the tank and start all the pumps, open ball valves and turn on the gizmos and gadgets. Your hold your breath in hopes you get no leaks, explosions, etc.
Anyway, I went back a few pages to see get an idea of dialing in my MR1. The general idea is to adjust the water level about an inch above the black box and open up the needle valve about a turn or two.
Right now I am getting foam about an inch, inch and half above the black box. Is this where I would now adjust the gate valve and try to get the foam up into the cup? Or is it not broken it yet and it will rise on it's own?

I look at it this way, Do i want a 4 cyl gas saver truck or a 10 cyl diesel. Both will get you where you gotta go, But the diesel will outperform it. I seriously doubt a needlewheel skimmer can compare. I had one so i have an idea. Well unless you pop 2-3 more pumps on it and then youre getting the same power consumption as the beckett. This is JMO. I am spoiled now with this skimmer. Now i havent seen a bubbleking or deltec work but i dont have 2 to 3 grand for a skimer either
My mrc skimmer has pulled out stuff i didnt think was there.

i agree, i have a needlewheel in my 50 gallon, it does work but nothing like my beckett, i even made it a recirculating & it still does not skim as well, dont get me wrong i have seen bubble kings & deltec & they work great, but in my opion i rather dump 2 grand on a huge tank then on a skimmer, unless i can get one for 500 bucks

is it normal to hear a slurping sound coming out of the top of my return line?? I have the tee branch on it with the pipe sticking up and im getting this nasty and annoying slurping noise every 2-4 seconds. what could be wrong?? ive had this problem ever since the cleaning lady hit on of my switches and turned of the return pump on my system. I came home and evrything was out of whack. Any ideas??

Andy did a few minor custom things to my MR-2; he shipped it in 2 or 3 days, plus a handful of UPS Days; he told me standard skimmers are in the 2 day neighborhood. I live just outside Buffalo; I think ship time was about 3 days.
And, can I tell ya how worth it the skimmer is? I can't believe I actually considered a needlewheel ASM/ER. Though I'm not sure if this thing could keep up with the SeaClone..
(Don't worry. I'm a not-so-proud ex-SeaClone owner, too)

Has anyone tried to modify the air intake on these things. I think I narrowed my problem to the adjustment on this thing as every few days I have to crank it open more. I was thinking of adapting the intake to fit a K&N crankcase filter or something similar. The cotton ball just seems to hinder the performance of this thing within the first few days...

I had the same problem. I think it has to do with the siphon being broken when the power went out.
I am using a Gen X 30 and I found it struggled with that configuration. Up 90 bend, over, 90 bend and down. Then trying to get the water up to the skimmer. It sounded like a bad washing machine. No matter how hard I tried or where I put the T at or how much water I used to prime.
I broke down and drilled the side of the tank and now my line goes straight in with only one elbow. Seems to be working very good. Don't know if you can do the same or not.

well i have a recirc skimmer so the skimmer is being fed by the overlow. then the pump is right next to it and it feed the two becketts. i was also thinkning that it was back pressure, but it seems my pump is primed so i dont think thats the problem. maybe tonight ill turn everything thing off and re-prime, and re set my skimer. thanks guys!

I have significantly modified my MR-3 skimmer air intake. I run my inlet air through a 2" diameter 10" long PVC pipe that I fill with carbon. I then split the outlet from this chamber to two Dwyer airflow meters and then to the dual becketts individually. This allows me to meter and adjust the airflow to each beckett individually and makes the whole system silent (other than the sound of the water pump). I do not hear any airflow noise. I will try and post photos this weekend, I am still testing and modifying the setup.
Hop - The problem I think you have is that the small flow area of the cotton ball makes the air speed up, making noise and rapidly plugging the cotton. A larger flow area (like your K&N idea) makes a silent filter that will last a much longer time without clogging and flow adjustments.
Just my 2 cents.
