Ixthys: Actually after opening it that first time I was so surprised to see bubbles blast up the riser and immediately begin to overflow into the cup, I just moved the water level to the mid way point in the first riser and then adjusted the injector. I would say it's 3/4 of the way open right now, but this seems to be pretty good:D

I've been running my MR-2 wide open since I got it -- I too found that the cotton had many problems so I took a cotton ball and ripped off just enough to cover the inlet and put it back in -- haven't had any problems since -- I too have the water level adjusted to about half way up the first riser. I consistently get great skimmate --

Hop,

nice,

you see that pic of the my skimming running dry above, thats actually the air filter :D

it contains a bigger air diffuser to it doesn't change air input and has carbon,

the carbon will helps stop any air pollutants in the air, from interring the skimmer and messing with performance, etc.,

I am also wondering about the quick release, is it really worth the $40 or can I do a DIY project and just drill a hole and put a tube? I am thinking it can't be this simple but I may be wrong.

Day 2.5 update:)

This thing is running great. I did have to back it off a hair as the skimmate was a tad too thin. Now this thing is pulling out some quality skimmate:D I'm very impressed now!

nunez1980: Thanks. Looks like I followed in your footsteps here! It'sd something that I never paid attention to until I found that I had skimmer envy:D

Ninja120: It depends. On the MR3 I don't use it as it's too hard to get a good seal. So I got it good and tight and leave it alone. I would wind up taking it off normal due to cleaning anyway. I have heard that on the smaller diameter tubes it works well though.

Ninja i find it easyer to clean when i take it apart, But you are still going to take the lower one off to clean anyways. Its a nice extra, But there are better upgrades, or even spend the cash on a waste collector instead.

Okay, Okay after weeks and weeks of bothering you guys I am sold.:D I am going to order a MR-1 tommorrow. I just have a few questions. I think I know the answer but I will ask anyway. I am going to get one of Andy's package deals so i will be getting a Gen-x pump. Which pump is best between,
Gen-X 6000 submersible at 1587GPH
or
Gen-X PCX30 external at 850GPH

I know pressure rated, pressure rated but still at like twice the GPH the sub. still sucks?

I ask because the install on the submersible would take like 15 minute but the install for the external involves alot more work.

So is the external worth it?

Second the need for an external pressure. Went from a MAG 24 to an Iwaki 70RLT and there's just no comparison, even though the MAG was supposed to provide more flow.

Just my 2 cents, but why not go for the MR-2, it's just $49 more and you have a lot more options to upgrade in the future. It's one of those things where you can always add a second injector or a few feet of riser tubes if you ever want to upgrade your tank. I've upgraded three times and all I had to do was buy a second injector for $75. When I finally went really big, I added a 12" riser tube for $110. It sure beats buying a complete new skimmer each time, but you need to have the platform to do it.

The suggested pump adds quiet a bit to the price when you move to the MR-2 but I am still milling that over. Have to see how much free money I have to throw around. I was liking the 65watt pump for the little MR-1. The energy efficienty was my biggiest gripes from switching from a needlewheel. Will see...

Dialing in

Dialing in

Hey guys,

Want to see if this is normal or not in dialing in my MR1. If it's just a matter of a patience thing, then let me have it :D

Anyway, I am a newbie at the whole skimmer thing. I followed the directions on the MRC page. Letting it run for 24 hours, etc.

I would shut off the air and adjust the water via gate valve according to the MRC sheet. 1 to 1.5 inches. I even experimented with it half way above the first riser.

I then opened up the air all the way so I could adjust it down. Except one thing, the water would collapse into the black box and just gurgle there. Is this normal?

Thanks

Is with mine... Now start closing the gate valve. It's takes some filldling to get comfortable with it. Not sure I've got it dialed in 100% yet:)

FWIW when I first got my MR2 I ran it in the basement on a 29 for a couple of weeks to get the kinks out. I put it on the tank about 4 months ago and had it running pretty well(better than the skimmer it replaced) but not at it's optimum. Now 4 months later I feel like I've gotten proficient with it and I'ts doing exactly what I want it to. It takes a while to learn how to use a becket and get the most out of it IME:)

Covey,

I second the MR-2

I would do the MR-2 and use the pcx-30

The site recommends using a PCX 40 or a PCX 55. I hear that when using a beckett you should not skimp on the pump. Is that pump rated too low for that skimmer? Or am I getting the wrong idea?

Another questions is iwaki or genx better as external pump? On MRC website the suggest the PCX55 for an MR2, could I use the Iwaki MD 55 RLT. Will it skim as good even though it is 1080 GPH, compared to the 1200 GPH? Would there be any issues or would it be better if I got the Iwaki MD 70 RLT.

Well I am in.:D Just placed the order 15 min ago. I went with the MR-1 with the PCX30 external pump. Can't wait to get it.
