Hey cmhollis,
What kind of luck are you having dialing in your setup? Where do you have the water level set?

Ix,

I set the water level at 4" above the black box per Andy's directions. Then I slowly adjust each Beckett equally so that each one is operating about the same. It is working very well, pulling out tons of gunk.

Here is a photo from awhile back. Here the skimmer was pulling out crap from the Southdown (while I was getting the system up and running). Quite a bit of gunk considering there was only sand in the system:

I will try and get a better photo and post it.

Here is a photo showing the entire basement setup. Fuge is on the stand on the left, sump on the right. One megaflow drains to each tub, giving approximately 600 gph through the fuge, 1200 through the sump. This does not take into account the water recirculated by the skimmer.

Since this photo I had to upgrade the return from a Dart (couldn't pump against all the head) to a SW1000-3200 from Sequence. I am serisouly considering tapping off of it and driving the skimmer that way, as the pump seems to be serious overkill for a return, and I could remove the HD70, helping a little on the electric bill. Any thoughts on this?

I also added a 250W MH w/LAIII over the fuge to help keep temperature up as the basement is quite cold in the winter, and to grow the chaeto.

Thanks,

Mike

I believe the problem to be your injecting more air now, and the drain from the skimmer cup isn't large enough to evacuate that air effectivly, so the air is trying to escape elsewhere.

Try this, remove the lid when the skimmer is running and see if the foam spills over much quicker. This is what I just noticed yesterday.

I'm thinking of adding a second drain line to let the air out much easier. Just contacted Andy as well to see what he thinks.

Good one,:thumbsup:I just tried this on the MR1 i got from you.it went from a medium skim to a wet skim in just a few minutes.I am able to open the air valve right up using the mak 4 pump:D

Thanks for the replies. The reason I asked is that I have the standard mr-2 with two becketts, and I was wondering if people were having better luck running with the stated pump or overdriving them. I have the option of buying the Blueline 55 or a Sequence Wahoo. But was just wondering if the Blueline would be the best and the Wahoo would be overkill, or if I would get better performance with the Wahoo.

Anyone done the Air hole in the lid mod? I know i it seen listed somewhere that if done right, the skimmer would still have the auto off.
Is it done the same as with the table tennis ball?

Thanks i might have to give it try.altho tapping the drain bigger seems a bit more easy.

Im going to be ordering a mrc-2 and was thinking of useing a gen-x55 pump to drive it. I read some pages back about useing an up and over the sump because i am not able to drill the tank right now. So if you run it up and over then put a T in on the downward side to fill with water to start the pump? Does the cap on the t have to be air tight? Has anyone done an up and over with a genX? Pics would be great if you have any.
Thanks

That's what I am running and yes the cap has to be air tight(not hard to do with teflon tape). No pics, I kind of have everything crammed under my 90 and it's hard to get one:)

I'm using the up and over on a genx pcx 40.With no T, i used flexible pvc(spa) from the pump to skimmer and if i need to fill the pump i just do it from injecter housing.
Also i read that the flow from the genx pumps are impeeded using the up and over.In a few weeks i will be setting up a new sump drilled for the pump,so i'm kinda waiting to see if thats true or not.

From what i've read (don't remember where exactly), if your doing the up and over with the gen-x, up your pipesize to like 1.5" on the up and over.

Ok guys I am thinking of trading in my ASM G6. My total volume is 400 gallons. I am eyeballing either the MRC4 or 6. How close are MRC ratings. For example my G6 is rated for 1200 gallons but most people figure its good for 600. To me a 600 gallon skimmer on a 400 gallon tank is perfect

I think Andy pretty much stands by his ratings.I talked to him about upgrading to a MR2 or just getting a exstension to upgrade my MR1 and he thought i needed nethier.Just coming from a ASM 3 skimmer a few months ago i had some very small algea problems.but i can say there gone now and the rocks are clean as can be.;)

Steve, I would go with the MR-4 because you can just buy an extension riser (14" I think) and it will be an MR-6 if need be. :D

One more qustion about the up and over. Do you have to prime it everytime like after a power outage has anyone ever lost a pump from not being there while the power went out then came back on?
