I got a MR2 used... I purchased from Andy a 12" extension and a GenX PCX 70 pump. Also it has dual beckets. My question is if anyone is using this pump and will it be too much for the skimmer. Thanks

I don't think there is much chance of buying too much pump for a Becket skimmer. The stronger the pump the better in my opinion.
I am using a Sequence Barracuda on my MR-4 and it works just fine.

Should be perfect for that skimmer with the dual beckets from what I have been told.

I too am looking at different pumps from the PanWorld/Blueline one that I have -- I have noticed that the pump that I have is adding easily 3+ degrees of heat into my tank --

If I turn off the pump for a few days I get a consistant 79 durring the day and 77 at night -- with the pump running it tops out at 84 durring the day and 81-82 at night --

Would the sequence help this situation? I have read threads where people have experienced heat addtion from sequence pumps as well.

I am having trouble getting my MR2 to produce skimate. Do I want to have a T in the output from the skimmer? If I dont it creates a siphon and I have to close the gate valve alot. If I put the T in it, there is some fluctuation in the water level in the skimmer. When I first set everything up from a move a few weeks ago I was using a mag 24 and was able to get a bit of skimmate. Then last week, I switched to the PCX 70 and cant get it to produce any skimmate. I guess I could be that there is nothing in the water but It is a 200+ system with a large SF eel and a Undulate trigger.

Here is a couple pics of the setup is there anything that I am doing wrong?

Also later this week I am going to add a 12" extension to it.

Thanks

Is it broken in flying ace? Is the pump new? You shouldn't have any problem getting LOTS of skimmate with that setup.

You will not get a hole lot out that pump because it will not take in the water the way it is pipe up.You need a bulkhead fitting in that sump. All so you need to put the becketts down on the top of the box.

Not to be argumenative but my pcx55 is plumed over the top and it works just fine. A bulkhead makes things "easier" but is not required. Bigger intake tubing would help but is also not absolutely necessary.

I agree with you fishdoc11, many have told me to run pumps this way. My return is done this way and I am not loosing any performance.
The pump is brand new, I guess I am not being patient enough. Is the way that I plumbed the return from the skimmer done correctly?
Thanks

Is your drain above or under the water level? If it is above, you may want to drop it below water level because you have the 'T'/vent on there. That may help your fluctuating water level by adding a little back pressure.

Also if the pump is new my guess is that it needs a few days to get the manufacturing residue etc... out to skim properly.

Well, the drain is above just a little so I went to add a bit to it and the skimmer looked like it started making some foam. I guess my problem was just my patience then afterall.
Thanks

Why would he want to put the becketts down on the top of the box? Doesn't that increase the backpressure on the beckett? I thought that the beckett only needed a little backpressure to work well, and too much is detrimental.

RGibson may be right about the pump - did you prime the "up and over" loop prior to starting the pump? I can't tell if you have a priming T on the pipe or not.

Good luck.

I learned my skimmer really well with the straight in, I can make it do what I want.

I tried putting the up and over back on and it was horrible. I had to jack my air/water way up to get it to skim like it was with the straight in.

The reason I went straight in was because I called the pump manufactures about the up and over. Their exact words were "These pumps are great and pushing water, not so great at pulling it."

I researched the subject more and found that people are using pipe 2X's the size for the up and over, then reducing it right before the pump.

I tried this but got a surging effect.

the pump might be pulling in air with water the way it is plumed, bulkhead would work better.
i ran a test on my dual beckeet with pipes like u have & then took them off & right down to the box, the only diference that i saw was that the foam was more stable when i used the pipes, but it works both ways, i still think that the pipes & the bulkheads should be 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 for better flow.
i just got a new pump for my skimmer & it works great, it's a coralife turbosea 1740, the iwaki was a power hog !!
